The energy industry in Mexico
Mining in Mexico has a long history dating back over 500 years and it can now boast being the one of the largest metal producers in the world and is, in fact, the largest producer of silver in the world. This industry is supported by a strong renewable energy sector that contributes 26% of the country's electricity generation and this is predicted to rise to 35% by 2035. This is being led by government initiatives to create less reliance on imports and drive the domestic, rural job market. Finally, Mexico is also a leading global producer of Oil and ranks 11th in the world in terms of production and home to two of the largest oil fields in the world, Cantarell Field and Ku-Maloob-Zaap.
