The energy industry in Malaysia
Led by the state petrol giant, Petronas, Malaysia is the 4th largest oil-producing country in Asia. The country production moves between 650,000 and 850,000 barrels per day and the government has started the process of investing in better technology and new oil field development to try and reverse a recent negative production trend. Mining is also a key industry in Malaysia contributing to 7% of the country’s GDP with the main minerals extracted being coal, clay, gold, aggregate, iron ore and limestone to name a few. Growth of renewable energy in Malaysia has been slow but the country has set itself a target of 20% renewable energy generation by 2025.
