Position Summary

The Designer III leads the design group and must demonstrate the skill sets and aptitude necessary to effectively guide people. She/he applies creative design skill, knowledge of manufacturing techniques, and Computer Aided Design Drafting practices to the review of layout, assembly, and detail drawings for mechanical, structural, piping, electrical, and electronic equipment of simple to moderate complexity for a variety of OII-MSD projects. The Designer III will review sketches and other graphic information for use within technical documents (e.g. Operations and Maintenance Manuals) and proposals. Designer III have responsibility for the design department personnel and assure all design work is produced to established department standards. Originality and imagination are key to this position, as there is typically restrictions to space, size and/or weight that are applicable requiring invention of systems/components that do not currently exist.

Duties & Responsibilities

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Will work with supervisor in developing a budget and schedule for work assigned to the group.
• Will be responsible in assigning the work as well as ensuring the budget is maintained and scheduled dates are met for this work.
• Performs independent reviews or original design and interacts with engineering and manufacturing personnel to ensure performance and efficiency of manufacture, assembly, and integration.
• Can check technical accuracy and completeness of all drafting.
• Tasking will include review of drawings, layout and detailed design of mechanical systems using various drafting techniques (AutoCAD or SolidWorks).
• Will interface with clients.
• Will supervise work of one or more designers on multiple projects.
• Will mentor all design personnel within the group when needed.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

• Support the development of bids and proposals.
• Support engineering activity with solid modeling to prepare models for export to engineering analysis/simulation software including merging and meshing of parts and application of load vectors under the direction of the Design Supervisor.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

• Associate Degree in related engineering field, or equivalent work experience.
• Formal Training in use of solid modeling software (i.e. SolidWorks).

EXPERIENCE

• At least ten years experience working with Military Standards and other Government specifications.
• Proficiency using software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks required.
• Computer skills using Microsoft Office products required. Technical writing skills are helpful.
• Working knowledge of U.S. Navy specifications and requirements related to Structural, Mechanical, Piping and Electrical drawings.
• Ability to obtain a clearance.

KNOWLEDGE

• Strong computer skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite and PeopleSoft experience is a plus.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Background knowledge in government and commercial contract requirements.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the ASME Y14 drafting standards.

The shipyard/base/manufacturing work environment; the site may contain mobility barriers with uneven ground level and obstructed pathways. Climatic and environmental conditions at the job site will be indoor/outdoor climate with various temperatures and noise levels caused by tools, machinery, equipment, and etc.

Employee may be required to do the following: ability to access and work in confined spaces, reaching in all directions, handling and manipulating objects and materials; coordinating the movement of eyes, hands and fingers to operate machines and equipment; lifting 50 lbs from ground level, waist level, and/or overhead; carrying objects, etc.; ascending/descending inclined ships gangways; climbing ladders, standing; crawling, squatting, bending, sitting; walking; seeing with or without correction; hearing with or without correction; following set procedures and standards; applying basic mathematical skills; following oral and/or written directions; reading; writing; ability to recognize and report safety hazards. Protective equipment will be required to be worn at all times. This is Medium work.

(Exerting up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 to 25 pounds of work frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work).
