Candidate Profile

You are someone who possesses the following experience and credentials:

  • Undergraduate degree in economics, mathematics, computer science, statistics; accounting, finance, or similar quantitative discipline; Advanced degree is a plus.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' in an Energy Trading Firm, or two (2) years' experience in a Market Compliance role or an equivalent market compliance role at an exchange, RTO/ISO or governmental regulatory oversight body.
  • Experience with Power trading desk is a strong plus.
  • Ability to solve problems and think critically while analyzing complex and detail trade data (firm and market, orders and executions).
  • Ability to transform and analyze large data sets with a focus on the details and interconnected relationships.
  • Hands-on experience and proficiency with data analysis and statistical modeling tools: SQL, Python, MS Power Query, Alteryx, Excel VBA, Power BI, Spotfire, etc.
  • Experience with FXML, drop copies and REST APIs implemented by ICE Futures, CME and Nodal for orders and executions.
  • Experience with industry tools and technologies (Power BI / MS Power Query / Alteryx / Excel VBA / Python / SQL / Spotfire / CubeWatch / SMARTS / Whistler / Fairwords / Behavox / Shield, etc..)
  • Strong, working understanding of Energy markets and products (Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas); experience with day to day operations, risk management and trading practices used in the industry and how such trading activities may interact to create the appearance of market manipulation or other market rule violations.
  • Detailed knowledge of industry laws, regulations, and standards applicable to Energy Trading, and experience with regulatory analysis related to trading activities.
  • Demonstrated experience with the CFTC's Division of Enforcement and the FERC's Office of Enforcement and their views on market manipulation.
  • Proven communication and presentation skills, oral and written, with ability to communicate with a variety of individuals and personalities.
  • Ability to prioritize job requirements in a high pressure, multi-tasking environment; strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work across the organization to balance market compliance requirements with commercial opportunities and business objectives.
  • Must be self-starting and willing and able to work independently in a dynamic trading organization under pressure of tight deadlines and aggressive expectations.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook)

Activities

Under the general supervision of the Senior Market Compliance Data Analyst, the Market Compliance Monitoring Data Analyst (Power) helps monitor the external market and surveils internal transactions and communications to help ensure compliance with market rules and regulations.

Main responsibilities:

• North American Trade Surveillance and Monitoring

  • Independently monitors daily power and renewable transactions across the organization to helps ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and exchange rules; reviews any issues with trader(s) and/or trading desk(s) managers and escalates as necessary.
  • Monitors and analyze daily position limit production reports, and daily trading activities in the system.
  • Monitor and analyze relevant external market data and exchange data.
  • Conducted new contract testing data analysis with operational compliance team.
  • Analyzes business communications and trading communications to flag irregularities related to trading; closes, investigates and/or escalate to teams as necessary.
  • Use PBI tool to analyze trading data and build data analytical models.
  • Enhances processes and tools to continuously improve the organizations monitoring capabilities and adapts the program to changes in the business and external laws and regulations; assists with the identification and creation of new surveillance reports.
  • Works with other Control functions to help ensure compliance with regulations and rules set by various external regulatory agencies.

• Works with the Market Compliance team to:

  • Translate market compliance requirements in laws, regulations and rules into quantitative detection scenarios that will allow the team to monitor for compliance;
  • Develops, tests, and implements new analytical tools used by the Market Compliance team to detect non-compliant activities.
  • Review data on power transactions (company and market, orders and executions, end of day market stats, asset bids and offers); communications in whistler; fundamental data (e.g., supply/demand, weather, commodity movements, etc.)

• Design, test, refine and implement detection scenarios/screens that identify:

  • the companies common trading patterns and deviations from historical behaviors
  • trading patterns or events the require further analysis for potential market manipulation or other non-compliant activities.

• Help with maintain the Power Market Enforcement Actions knowledge base

  • Coordinate with market regulatory analyst to maintains the organization's market rules and enforcement knowledge bases.
  • Publishes monthly Market Compliance Alerts to raise awareness.
  • Assists the Market Compliance team with pulling record, investigating, and responding to ad-hoc queries from the management and external regulatory inquires.
