Job Description:

The Furnace Layout Engineer is responsible for the mechanical/piping design and layout of ethylene cracking furnaces. This includes the development of furnace layouts, the specification of furnace components, and the preparation of engineering drawings. The Furnace Layout Engineer will work closely with other engineering disciplines, such as process, piping, control systems and structural departments, to ensure that the furnace design meets all requirements.

We are looking for a self-motivated person, looking for an opportunity to broaden their skills into an exciting technology area. Based in Milton Keynes with potential for travel globally.

Responsibilities include:
  • Developing furnace layouts that meet all technical and safety requirements.
  • Prepare engineering drawings for furnace components and assemblies.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines to ensure that the furnace design is integrated with the overall plant design.
  • Participate in engineering reviews, client and vendor meetings.
  • Site inspections
  • Produce technical drawings using approved software and tools such as AutoCAD and Microstation.
  • Maintain engineering documentation.
  • Adhere to defined CAD implementation procedures
  • Read and understand contract requirements and project scope of work.
  • Specify furnace components, such as refractory, burners, coils, fans, supports.
  • Calculations for refractory design, pressure containment, support design etc.
  • Develop understanding of other discipline roles and responsibilities (e.g., Structural, Civil, Electrical, Controls, and Piping)
  • Develop knowledge of relevant codes and standards applicable to project and equipment requirements (e.g., API, ASME, ANSI, and OSHA regulations) in execution of design as applicable
  • Produce mechanical designs & calculations using approved software and tools.


Typical background and experience required:
  • 5+ years of experience in a engineering design company or other industrial settings preferably on major projects in the petrochemical and related industries.
  • Experience in the industrial layout of equipment and piping or similar.
  • HNC or Degree in a relevant engineering subject.
  • Experience in using 2D CAD software Autocad and/or Microstation
  • Good spatial awareness with a practical problem-solving mindset.
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering principles and practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team


Desirable Experience / Qualifications include:
  • Experience in furnace and fired heater components.
  • Membership of appropriate engineering institution.
  • Experienced in production of 3D models
  • Site Experience.
