We are looking for System Safety Engineers to join our highly reputable team based at London, Manchester, Bristol or Birmingham. This role provides a fantastic career opportunity to provide leadership on some of the most challenging and complex UK and international rail projects, whilst supporting the development and growth of our safety team through the sharing of your knowledge and experience.
A typical week would include: Providing system safety leadership and guidance to our clients on large, complex projects. This could include: Technical and project management from the bidding stage through to delivery.Planning and chairing Hazard Identification and / or Risk Assessment workshops including Explicit Risk Estimation on specific areas that may be qualitative or quantitative.Preparing, checking or approving key safety documents including System Definitions, Safety Plans, Hazard Records and Safety Justification Reports; demonstrating the application of CSM-RA for rail projects that deliver technical, operational and/or organisational change.Representing WSP and/or our clients at System Review Panel (SRP) meetings.Liaising with and managing the relationship with independent assessors (ISA / AsBo). Supporting the development of our junior team, providing mentorship where appropriate, and acting as the focal point for technical expertise and guidance. Working collaboratively with our clients and internal teams in the development of designs, technical standards, specifications and requirements for rail projects. Encouraging and promoting the innovation and implementation of new techniques and tools which may improve efficiency and effectiveness of the services offered by SEIA. Identifying and progressing opportunities for safety engineering on UK and international projects. Developing the ‘brand’ and reputation of SEIA through active involvement with industry partners and professional engineering institutions. This may include sitting on councils, committees and working groups which promote and drive technical excellence in the field of system safety, and / or writing and presenting papers at conferences and events.
We'd love to hear from you if you have: A degree in a technical engineering related discipline, or extensive relevant experience. Significant post-graduate experience in system safety engineering (rail desirable, but not essential). Corporate membership with an appropriate professional institution (e.g. SaRS, IET, IMechE). Professional registration as a Chartered Engineer (or significant progression towards that goal). Proven ability to provide technical leadership to a team of System Safety Engineers. Proven ability to support a safety approach, engineering activities and/or arguments to clients, acceptance/approval and regulatory authorities in the UK, with international experience desirable. Extensive knowledge and experience in the application of the Common Safety Method on Risk Evaluation and Assessment (CSM-RA) Regulation on UK rail projects. Familiarity with the Interoperability Regulations. Knowledge and experience in the application of CENELEC EN 50126/8/9. Knowledge and experience with Engineering Safety Management (e.g. iESM or Yellow Book). Knowledge and background in a mainline or metro railway discipline, e.g. signalling, telecoms, E&P.
Desirable Requirements: Experience of working on international projects. Industry recognition in the field of system safety. Fellowship with an appropriate professional institution (e.g. SaRS, IET, IMechE). Experience in other sectors (e.g. aviation, nuclear, defence). Experience in the consultancy environment, including as an Assessment Body or Independent Safety Assessor.
