Job Description:

Leads the execution of smaller scale, often business unit specific, NPI projects; aligns, leads, plans, and manages resources for implementing major activities, owns and manages input to the NPI Project Plan; balances trade-offs to maintain enterprise perspective and customer focus while planning and executing major activities supporting NPI projects.


Supports the NPI process by leading, directing, and coordinating NPI team members in smaller scale (usually business unit specific) individual projects and major activities that support specific NPI projects.  Assembles a business case for project requests by documenting requirements, establishing a Financial Plan, and defining the project success criteria.  

Responsible for managing overall NPI program scheduling and activity tracking for specific NPI programs, including the development of master detailed project management schedule and determination of resource requirements assuring program dates can be obtained. Update the project management plan, track progress, identify potential problems early, and resolve problems with the team in a timely manner. Develop and communicate project management principles and techniques for the various NPI functional areas.  Facilitate creation of the NPI program project charters and maintain the master version of the document.  

Schedule meetings and facilitate meetings as necessary.  Document the activities and issues that surface in the meetings and distribute this to internal and external team members.  Track progress on NPI Gateway checklist items and compile the supporting documentation.  Deliver the NPI portion of the presentation in Gateway Reviews. Assure the timely creation of key NPI documentation - Customer and Business Requirements, Program and Technical Specifications, etc.

Drives continuous improvement in the efficiency of the NPI Team by identifying and recommending new approaches, policies, and standard operating procedures.  Resolves internal issues by assuming ownership of problems, strategizing with affected departments, and selecting and implementing solutions.

Typical internal customers include the employees in one Division.  The position's primary customers are internal.  The position is challenged to quickly and correctly identify problems, which may not be obvious.  The incumbent solves problems by determining the best course of action, within departmental guidelines, from many existing solutions.  The incumbent is free to determine the best way to complete job assignments in order to achieve desired results.  Work is reviewed after completion, except in the most complex or high impact situations.  Impacts key quality goals including Customer Satisfaction, Continuous Improvement, Timeliness, Efficiency, Cost Savings, etc.

Limited travel required (Less than 5% of working time).

The position requires knowledge of various Caterpillar products, product applications or merchandising programs.  Familiarity with Caterpillar functional areas, policies and procedures is required.  Must have good knowledge of the NPI process and the functioning of the various functional areas involved.  The position typically requires a college or university degree or equivalent experience.  In addition, three to five years of job-related experience are typically required.  Incumbent should have good oral and written communication skills.
