Jacobs is a prime government contractor providing facilities support services for NASA Ames Research Center. Our support to Ames includes a broad scope of research and institutional facility-related maintenance, operations, engineering, environmental and emergency services.

Employees in this classification perform Journeymen level mechanical work involved with the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of the air handlings units, chillers, boilers, VAV’s, VRV’s, fume hoods, pumps and motors under general supervision. Assignments can be received in the form of work orders, blueprints, sketches, verbal instructions and employees may be expected to schedule their own work and determine work priorities. At this level, employees are expected to diagnose problems independently and determine the appropriate method and procedure needed to complete the work. Working with the Lead and co-workers, the HVAC Technician is expected to ensure that the work specifications conform to shop standards and must create and maintain a positive team atmosphere with effective interpersonal skills.

The HVAC Technician must comply with applicable federal, state, NASA, OSHA and environmental laws and regulations. Technician must wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment {PPE} at all times as determined by position and duties and must be able to meet tight deadlines and have an ability to handle potentially high-stress situations.



Education: High school diploma or GED; completion of HVAC apprenticeship

Experience: 4-year journeyman or 2-year technical experience

Training: CFC and HFC certification for universal type refrigerants

Skill Requirements: Skilled in the use of hand and power tools common to the trade. Ability to interpret and apply codes, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings. Knowledge of operation and installation of a variety of complete HVAC systems/equipment. Strong HVAC diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities.

•        High noise level (work around compressors and chillers): 10

•        Inside (moderate temps – equipment spaces): 45

•        Inside (temps above 76 degrees – spaces with heat generating equipment): 30

•        Outside (roofs, penthouses, equipment sheds): 20

•        Office: 5

Criticality of Attendance

•        Regular Shift (Mon-Fri 7:30am to 4:00pm): 90

•        Overtime (after 40 hours or weekends): 5

•        On Call Hours: 5

The person selected for this position must meet all the following requirements:

Pass a physical examination administered by a medical service.

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record.

Must be able to obtain a NASA badge and maintain access to the workplace facility.
