The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. About this role

The Tailings and Water Treatment Superintendent reports to the Process Manager and ensures that the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) operation meets recognized international standards. This person collaborates closely with the Process Operations Superintendent for daily tailings management activities, and with the Tailings Facility Engineer (RTFE) to ensure that internal and external standards and guidelines pertaining to tailings storage facilities are met. We lead the operation of the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), Treated Water Storage Reservoir (TWSR), TSF Booster station and all ancillary systems including the TSF seepage bores and pumping systems.
Moreover, the incumbent develops strong working relationships with the Mining and Environmental departments, along with our Business Partners to ensure safe, compliant optimization of the TSF. A key aspect of the role is ensuring efficient, fit for purpose solutions delivered on schedule, which are consistent with business plans and enhance Merian’s performance. Development and progression of our National team is another key responsibility of the role. 
 



In this role you will

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:   Reporting:
  • Prepare monthly reports on tailings management. 
  • Through previous knowledge of water flows, we ensure adequate water supply to the process plant. We assist in the development and operation of the site water model.
  • We assist with the preparation of capital and operating cost budgets for the Tailings Dams. Prepare and review expenditure requests (AFE’s), as the need arises, to fund expansion of the dam and pumping systems 
  • In conjunction with Mining Geotechnical and Environmental Superintendents, we conduct weekly, monthly and quarterly TSF inspections. We report on non-compliance and report/handle corrective actions via Cintellate reporting system. 
Functional Planning/Scheduling
  • We review the TSF operations with Process Plant Superintendent or Delegate, coordinate Tailings Dam wall lifts with Site Personnel, Design Consultants and Business Partners, as the need arises.
  • We set the deposition plan in accordance with Newmont Standards to maintain the decant pond and ensure correct rates of rise of the dam walls, plan wall construction with the nominated consultant and oversee construction of TSF Dam lifts to meet Operational needs as defined by the long term TSF strategy.
  • We assist in the development and review of the long-term TSF dam lift and operational strategy.
  • We identify projects, which have an impact on the long term TSF and Water Systems operation and develop strategies to implement.
  • Coordinate with TSF design consultants to model in advance of deposition and ensure planning of the TSF Dam lifts is ahead of deposition.
Safety
  • We ensure that all Personnel (including contractors) who are required to work at the TSF maintain appropriate safety standards and ensure Merian TSF meets recognized international standards.
  • We ensure that appropriate training programs are put in place for all personnel requiring access to or working at the TSF or on the water systems, and that training procedures and records are maintained up to date

Operational Participation

  • We routinely report on the status of Merian TSF and  ensure dam construction is aligned with Newmont Standards and operational needs.
  • We review proposed rehabilitation plans with the Environmental Manager.
  • Collaborate closely with Merian water, tailings, and geotechnical consultants to ensure that practical operating systems are implemented and  ensure key International Cyanide Code commitments and requirements are implemented and recorded to maintain certification for the Site.
Environment
  • We assist in the management of seepage control systems of all Merian Tailings Embankments.
  • We ensure that the TSF and water systems are managed in accordance with the site Tailings Management Plan and environmental design criteria.
Project Delivery
  • We manage the Water and Tailings Operations team to ensure that dam deposition is delivered in accordance with agreed schedules and budgets whilst minimizing downtime and impact on process operations. 
  • We liaise with Mining & earth moving Business Partners to coordinate project construction activities.
  • We review scope of works and project execution strategies to develop construction methodologies and commissioning management plans

Knowledge: 

  • Preferred Tertiary Qualification - Civil Engineering, Geotechnical, Metallurgy, Mining or Chemical Engineering. 
  • Knowledge and understanding of regulations applicable to management of tailings facilities, freshwater extraction, and mine site operations.

Experience: 

  • Min of 10+ years’ experience in Management & Operation of Large Tailings disposal facilities, Water treatment plants and/or Mineral Processing Plants.
  • Previous experience in developing countries.
  • Demonstrated skills and ability leading and overseeing a multicultural and multidisciplinary group. with varying skills in a complex process plant.
  • Validated ability training and developing others.
  • Previous experience in training and nationalizing personnel in developing countries will be well regarded. 

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Strong technical and analytical skills centered around planning, cost control, monitoring, instrumentation, QA/QC, and reporting. 
  • Familiarity with and understanding water supply and distribution management practices, ground water supply and water pumping.
  • Strong familiarity with hydrogeology and geo-technics.
  • Proven skills and experience achieving production and construction schedules in tailings storage facilities, industrial processing operations, or chemical operations, and/or equivalent.
  • Above average communication and interpersonal skills, (English-language fluency is required).
  • Ability to prioritize workload and handle multiple priorities at once. Able to change focus and priorities, as required. 
  • Strong PC skills using MS office software. 


Working Conditions and Location

This role is mainly located in our Merian, Suriname site

Works on a 6/3 weeks schedule. This schedule may vary due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.

We are capable of and willing to work for extended periods outdoors in a tropical climate.

We wear personal protective equipment including steel-toed boots, long sleeved shirts, or any other equipment to perform duties safely as required by the Health and Safety plan.

Regular exposure to moderate amounts of noise, dust and dirt at most work sites, and may work in remote areas or around HME.
