Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is the surest path to limitless, clean fusion energy. CFS is looking for a structures manufacturing engineer to partner with design engineers on upcoming hardware development and to build a new manufacturing line for large tokamak assemblies. The structures manufacturing engineer will lead in-house manufacturing process development to grow the production line from development to full-scale production.At CFS, we are designing and building cutting-edge hardware that will revolutionize safe, clean energy production for the world. To do this, we’re developing new designs and manufacturing techniques and building out work spaces for both R&D and production. The CFS Structures Manufacturing Engineer will:
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:
- Collaborate with design engineers and analysts on early-stage hardware development with a focus on manufacturability, scalability, and cost
- Work with design engineers, procurement specialists, and external vendors to develop manufacturing processes, including machining and inspection of large metallic structures and tooling
- Own process development of the manufacturing line for tokamak structural assemblies from initial low-volume R&D to full-scale production
- Develop and qualify manufacturing techniques, processes, flow maps, and work instructions for structural components and assemblies
- Develop welding and non-destructive test processes and certification plans
- Implement DFM (design for manufacturability) and PFMEA (process failure mode and effects analysis) methodology and statistical process controls to set up a reliable, low defect manufacturing line
- Troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing discrepancies with a focus on continuous improvement, influence make vs. buy decisions and work with external vendors to augment internal capabilities

- Bachelor's degree in engineering field is required
- 5+ years' experience as a manufacturing engineer on large structural systems and tooling
- Experience with large metallic structures and manufacturing processes related to machining, welding, drilling, and non-destructive test methods
- Experience taking products from R&D into production, including developing manufacturing techniques to transition from low-volume manual to high-volume automated processes
- Project management experience working with internal customers and external vendors to deliver manufactured hardware within specified timelines and budgets
- Experience with the application of Lean and/or Six Sigma methodologies
- High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly with excellent troubleshooting/problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in CAD for tooling design is preferred (NX & Teamcenter is a plus)
