Hedging Analyst (Energy Commodity Trading)

The Hedging Execution team, within the Group Commodity Management directorate, is an integral part of Centrica’s Energy Marketing and Trading (EM&T) division.

The team manages the supply risk of Gas, Power & Renewable products on behalf of the British Gas Residential and Business’s customers, worth around £6bn per annum. It also hedges and risk manages the output from Centrica’s share of the UK nuclear generation fleet and the upstream Oil and Gas production through the SPIRIT Energy JV.

The team is responsible for hedging strategies, mitigating commodity risks and supporting commercial performance via execution through the trading teams within the Energy Marketing and Trading division.

The Job role:

The Hedging Analyst supports the execution of energy hedging transactions, bringing market trends and fundamentals to bear within the agreed strategies and risk limits. The role is responsible for delivering efficient commodity costs with performance being assessed against value added KPIs. The role requires significant collaboration with other members of the team in developing tools and models to enhance or expand the analytical capabilities with a constant focus on high performance and delivery.

The role also supports the Senior Analysts in providing information to senior stakeholders, ensuring that management is aware of relevant market movements and developing commodity risks. They will be responsible for communicating the effects of their actions and commodity market risks on positions across the portfolio.

The person will liaise with a range of teams and departments including Trading, Risk, Business Finance, Origination, Quantitative Analytics & IS within EM&T and Risk, Demand Forecasting, Pricing & Propositions within the supply businesses. The person will frequently work on projects & challenge independently. 

Responsibilities will include:

  • Publishing the morning and afternoon energy market report to our internal and external customers

  • Running and supporting daily tasks involving pricing, position reporting, commodity hedging and risk management activities

  • Thorough understanding of pricing models and methodologies including periodic reviews ensuring alignment with commodity markets

  • Daily collaboration with other members of the team to track market developments, evaluating our hedging execution strategy

  • Proactively identify short term changes to the commodity environment and develop & propose target tactical adjustment to the hedging approaches, continuously improving performance

  • Efficient execution of orders with trading teams, ensuring compliance with all EM&T and Centrica policies

  • Analyse and clearly communicate the multiple risks facing the business (price, volume, shaping, regulatory etc), and work with members of the team to develop risk mitigating strategies.

  • Continuously monitor the regulatory changes impacting the area of responsibility and work with the regulatory teams across the group to mitigate risks

  • Continuous improvement of reports and analytical content related to Energy Markets

  • Assist the Senior Analyst with the periodic review of systems, processes and process documentation to ensure minimum operational risk

  • Ensure the customer is always at the heart of any changes / improvements.

The Person:

  • Good understanding and experience of the UK gas and power markets, ideally through hedging, trading, commodity fundamentals, risk management, pricing or demand forecasting

  • Understanding of location spreads, fuel switching, impact of storage positions as drivers of price

  • Good knowledge of global commodity and financial markets such as crude oil, LNG, European Gas & Power, FX and their impacts on UK gas and power prices

  • Good understanding of the different risks in energy supply portfolios with an ability to communicate these clearly through analysis and reports

  • Strong communication skills – ability to explain and / or present complex analysis concisely

  • Previous experience of dealing with customers - goes the extra mile in helping and supporting colleagues and customers

  • Proficiency in Python, Power-BI, MS Excel, VBA, SQL, etc

  • Experience of trading / managing risk and deliver PnL an advantage.
