We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to help provide advice and report on commercial and financial aspects of projects and contracts. The role includes offering support to the Project Team to allow projects to be safely delivered on time, to budget and to achieve the highest levels of customer satisfaction. The Assistant Quantity Surveyor will also assist the Senior/Quantity Surveyor in providing commercial expertise for projects to maximise returns by working within robust procedures to support the Commercial and Project Teams.

  • Location: Yorkshire region (regular travel to Rotherham)

Key Responsibilities

Working with the Senior/Quantity Surveyor to assist with below responsibilities

  • Supporting Project Team Stakeholders in the day-to-day management and delivery of projects

  • Attend, contribute and minute meetings both internal and external where required

  • Produce and send enquiries to subcontractors inviting them to tender and engagement with supply chain

  • Receive and analyse quotations, liaising with Key Stakeholders regarding price, proven history, availability etc

  • Assist in the production of Tenders for submission to a client

  • Preparation and administration of:

- Procurement advice, tenders, tender reviews and tender advice

- Various contract forms to contractors

- Interim valuations, Contractors’ claims and settlement of Final Accounts

  • Preparation and updating of standard cost databases and profiles

  • Assisting in the preparation of contract variations to review with project stakeholders and financial reviews in accordance with project requirements

  • Assisting Key Stakeholders in their role as Employer’s Agent / Contract Administrator

  • Demonstrate and actively promote high standards of health and safety behaviours and performance in all activities

  • Support the future growth and development of the business by demonstrating a commitment to learning. Safeguarding the business through continual development of skills required to meet with required legislation, business strategy and resilience

  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to delivering operational excellence and great customer service at all times

The Person

  • Commercial awareness and understanding of the Construction process

  • Understanding of broad business processes (e.g. marketing, technology, finance, project management etc)

  • Capability to effectively build and manage relationships with customers

  • Negotiation and communication skills with the ability to apply those skills internally or externally with relevant Stakeholders

  • Flexible approach to working hours and location in line with business needs

  • Ability to prioritize effectively with timely execution and resolution of tasks

  • Proactive mind-set and highly organized with excellent attention to detail

  • Confident and enthusiastic team member with the ability to work independently

  • Excellent IT skills with experience in Microsoft applications and project finance models

  • A good understanding of construction project lifecycles

  • Keen to pursue personal development needs and maintain an up-to-date knowledge

Competencies and Qualifications

  • Educated to a minimum of NVQ Level 3 in a construction related discipline and/or relevant extensive experience in a similar role (essential)

  • Educated to NVQ Level 4 in a constructed related discipline or possessing a relevant professional qualification (RICS or CIOB) and/or relevant extensive experience in a similar commercial management role for a housing provider (desirable)

  • Support for further qualification and growth can be offered through the employer should you be successful and after any probationary period has been completed

Experience

The candidate should have previous or current knowledge of a similar role and be able to “hit the ground running” with help and guidance from more senior members of the team. 

Experience should include:

  • Working with a cross section of teams both internally and externally

  • Budgetary control for small, medium and large projects

  • Procuring external contractors and consultants

  • Negotiating contractual claims and variations

  • Preparing management team financial reports
