The Client

Our client is facilitating the transition of the $36 billion surfactant market from harmful, oilbased chemicals to biobased alternatives by working with the current market leaders to provide a collaborative production platform.

The company is currently completing the build of its pilot facility launching tonne scale production of sophorolipids and work with multiple industrial partners to take the product to market. In line with this, they are fundraising to build their first ktonne scale commercial sophorolipid plant.

This highly successful business is expanding its focus beyond sophorolipids and developing processes to produce additional biosurfactants in collaboration with external market facing partners.

Our client is looking to recruit fermentation and downstream engineers who will work with their partners to develop commercially ready processes for these additional biosurfactants and then work to scale these up through their pilot to commercial scale.

The company believe collaboration between companies, disciplines and individuals are the best ways to develop the biosurfactant industry. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to broaden their skill set by working with field leaders around the world, within a dynamic and friendly working environment. The company offer a competitive pay package and benefits to attract incredible individuals to join their team based in Manchester, UK.

The Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for the application of the company breakthrough integrated production and gravity separation technology to additional biosurfactants, then scaling the process. This role will involve both hands on work in the lab, pilot and commercial facilities and desk-based engineering work. The appointee will work closely with the pilot plant team and the external collaborators, ensuring a smooth scale up process all the way through to commercial operation. Once the process is complete at laboratory scale, the candidate will be a key part of the team translating the process to pilot and then commercial scale.

Enthusiasm and ability to think creatively and develop new technology.

Expertise and experience in scale up of fermentation processes, and experience running a range of bioreactors from benchtop to industrial scale.

Strong mathematical skills and knowledge of calculations useful in the design, operation and scale up of fermentations and downstream processes, with the ability to be creative in finding new solutions to characterise processes.

Excellent trouble shooting skills in the context of fermentation and downstream processing.

Desirable:

Knowledge and experience of implementing process control systems.

Experience and ability to coordinate a scale up project with a range of industrial and academic partners.

Specific knowledge of biosurfactants, in particular glycolipid biosurfactants.

Understanding of lipid quantification and purification techniques.

Understanding of phase separation/surfactant behaviour.

PhD or similar development experience in process development for bioproducts.

Willingness to travel internationally for collaborative projects for up to 6 weeks at a time.
