Borrego is seeking a VP of Finance and Accounting for our independent and growing Development business.  This is an opportunity to join an outstanding company in a senior, high-leverage position, with a set of responsibilities that combines the traditional roles of Controller and head of corporate finance.  Accordingly, the strongest candidate will be an experienced accountant with broad business management and leadership interests.

About the Position

The VP of Finance and Accounting will report to the President of Development, and will lead the Accounting, Treasury, FP&A, and Office Management functions.  This currently comprises five direct reports in the org chart, with one position currently open; in this role you would lead further growth over time, and pick your team.  Depending on the successful candidate’s interest, experience, and ambitions, this position may also oversee IT.

The successful candidate will have the knowledge, skills, character, and solutions-oriented approach to lead a team in providing excellent support to the company’s project-oriented functions.  Our business is always changing, and we expect quite a bit of it in the year or two ahead; we are looking for someone who isn’t just capable of excellent management and maintenance, but someone who wants to build.

We view this as a critical business leadership position, and we seek someone who will collaborate deeply with the Development business’s existing leadership team not only to maintain and continuously advance a high level of service, but to leverage accounting, financial controls and analysis, and treasury to drive the business forward in all departments and functions as we grow quickly in service of an urgent mission.  The successful candidate must be comfortable and capable across the spectrum from high-level strategy to very detailed work in collaboration with individual contributors.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain systems and controls to ensure the integrity of all systems, processes and data relating to the company’s financial performance.
  • Maintain the company’s system of accounts and ensure all transactions and assets are properly accounted for in the company’s books and records.
  • Assure corporate income tax compliance and the accurate and timely completion of all corporate income tax returns.
  • Partner with the President of Development to develop the capital structure for the business, to execute on transactions to ensure adequate funding to support its growth, and to maintain relationships with commercial banks and lenders.
  • Oversee cash management.
  • Support management and business leaders in balance sheet management, capital planning, forecasting, and scenario planning.
  • Oversee the annual budgeting process.
  • Deliver financial analysis that is timely, meaningful, and drives business improvements; oversee reporting to the company’s Board, shareholders, and lenders.
  • Foster a growth mindset and culture of continuous improvement throughout your department, and lead a team that identifies and implements improvements to systems, processes, and practices.
  • Attract and manage top talent; supervise, develop, and mentor members of your team.
  • Share general business management and leadership responsibilities with the senior Development Leadership Team.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Refined business acumen and the ability to identify and implement practical solutions to complex business and accounting problems.
  • Track-record of developing excellent working relationship based on trust and transparency.
  • Experience building out and professionalizing a company’s finance function, including a demonstrated ability to gain consensus for and implement change.
  • Deep knowledge of GAAP and other accounting practices and pronouncements relevant to the development of solar projects or similar assets.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and organizational skills to manage numerous and sometimes competing responsibilities of varying urgency and criticality within a fast-paced work environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey advice in a succinct and actionable format. Comfort communicating about the business to the Board, financial institutions, and other key stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail while being able to describe the bigger picture and lead meetings.
  • Hardworking, responsive and adaptable to what the situation dictates, including possessing the strong interpersonal skills needed to work effectively in a team.
  • A history of developing others through coaching and mentorship.
  • An unwavering commitment to excellence, and the creativity, foresight, and desire to spur and implement continuous improvement and innovation.
  • A great teammate and a pleasure to work with…at least most of the time.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting and/or finance and active CPA license.
  • At least 10 years of progressive accounting and/or finance experience, preferably with energy industry experience.
  • At least five years of experience in a supervisory role.
  • Prior experience implementing a new accounting or ERP system strongly preferred.
