We currently have an opening at our Foothill Ranch, CA (Orange County) facility for a Fast Ion Physicist. The successful candidate will join the Fast Ion Diagnostics group, where they will have the opportunity to design, deploy, and maintain the data stream from a new fast ion diagnostic, use existing fast ion diagnostic data in concert with simulation for holistic Integrated Data Analysis, develop models of fast ion behavior in various configurations, design and lead fast ion experiments on C-2W, and contribute to our future design. TAE Technologies, Inc., formerly known as Tri Alpha Energy, is a national lab sized research program in high beta magnetically confined fusion plasmas, based on the advanced, beam-driven, field reversed configuration (FRC).  The current device, C-2W (aka Norman) is one of the largest fusion experiments in the United States.  Having recently accomplished its stated performance milestones, the program is beginning to plan for the next generation device, while continuing to study the fundamental physics questions related to the concept on C-2W. 

TAE’s advanced FRC concept relies on a large population of fast ions to maintain the configuration.  On C-2W, this is accomplished with eight high power neutral beam injectors.  There is therefore rich physics to study in the field of fast ion physics, including confinement, stability and transport, wave-particle interactions, and ion acceleration.  C-2W has a mature diagnostic suite, including staple fast ion diagnostics such as neutral particle analyzers, bolometers, fusion product diagnostics, and spectroscopy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, deploy, and maintain the data stream from a new fast ion diagnostic
  • Use existing fast ion diagnostic data in concert with simulation for holistic Integrated Data Analysis
  • Develop models of fast ion behavior in various configurations
  • Design and lead fast ion experiments on C-2W
  • Collaborates with other scientists and engineers to formulate complex scientific concepts and possible design solutions
  • Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, and may contribute to scientific literature and conferences
  • Monitors and evaluates completion of tasks and projects

 

Required Skills:

  • At least five years of experience working on a high temperature plasma or particle accelerator experiment
  • General knowledge of magnetic confinement and high temperature plasma diagnostics
  • Must have a strong background in experimental plasma physics and/or analyzing large data sets
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and strong personal motivation are necessary.
  • The ability to work in a dynamic, team environment is required.

Preferred Technical Experience:

  • High voltage electronics
  • High vacuum technology
  • One or more relevant plasma diagnostics (spectroscopy, particle detectors, etc.)
  • Neutral beam injection or RF heating systems
  • General electrical experience

Software Knowledge and Skills:

  • CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks)
  • Scientific data analysis (e.g., Matlab, IDL, R, Python)
  • Programming (e.g., C, FORTRAN, etc.)
  • Large databases (e.g., MDSPlus)

Education:

  • Required Education: Ph.D. in Experimental Plasma physics or related field
