Position Overview

The Kiewit Northern Market Director will be responsible for building on Kiewit’s success operating in Canada’s northern territories while continuing to grow our business and client base. This role will have ownership of key relationships with various levels of government, Indigenous partners, businesses, and communities, and other important stakeholders within our industry and the communities of the North in general. The Northern Market Director will work to identify new business opportunities for Kiewit across all engineering and construction markets. The growth opportunity for this role includes potential for management and oversight of existing and future construction operations.

Eastern Canada District's projects include highways, bridges, mass transit, mine site development & open pit operations, hydroelectric powerhouses, wind-power plants, dams & industrial that serves the construction and mining industries and operates in Eastern Canada.

The preferred location is to be based out of Yellowknife (or another northern Canadian Territory city). Travel through the northern territories as needed can be expected to build the level of personal relationships required for the role. A rotational work program is possible if time is to be split between the North and a home office.


  • Identify, develop, and maintain an opportunity pipeline of suitable projects in the North that fit Kiewit’s business plan in the area, including all three northern territories and northern parts of other Canadian provinces as required.
  • Assist and support our leadership team with strategy development and business initiatives within the organization.
  • Provide Strategic plans for new business opportunities and fosters new client relationships.
  • Serve as the primary client relationship manager, who builds long-term relationships with new and existing clients to generate new business opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities and businesses as a trusted partner.
  • Seek out new opportunities for First Nation partnerships wherever applicable.
  • Involvement in the community and industry as an influential leader through participation in organizations and memberships.
  • Actively participate in industry events as a participant or a speaker to promote the Kiewit brand and the projects we build.
  • Promote and lead all aspects of Kiewit’s safety culture and a commitment to Nobody Gets Hurt.
  • Ability to participate in estimate reviews and understand contract documents / requirements
  • Attend pre-bid job tours
  • Develop relationships with local subcontractors and suppliers and look for partnership opportunities
  • Effectively develop strategic plans and relationships with our regional clients and partners to ensure we are communicating with a common voice and message.
  • Clearly understand the client’s decision-making process and who the client’s decision-makers are.
  • Identify, track, report and document all opportunities that fit within the company’s Business Plan.
  • Understand the client’s organization, and our company’s relevant personnel to create organizational “zipper plans”.
  • Help shape the procurement process and extract, document and report on important information that provides us with an advantage in helping solve the client’s challenges and securing work.
  • Lead and/or support the team with executive level presentations/meetings to demonstrate our solutions-based capabilities to the client decision-makers.


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management or business (preferred) or equivalent years of relevant experience
  • 10+ years of experience working in the engineering and construction sector with a focus on Canadian infrastructure
  • Local working experience and strong knowledge of the Northern Canadian infrastructure market
  • Experience working with Indigenous businesses or working in Indigenous communities in Northern Canada
  • Proven experience in project management roles within the engineering and construction sector
  • Prior local / Northern experience working on large construction or infrastructure projects is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of alternative contracting models including Design-Build, P3, CMGC/CMAR, Alliance, IPD, Progressive Design-Build, etc. is a plus
  • Experience in procuring P3 projects is a PLUS
  • Procurement and contract administration experience is required
  • Ability to supervise maintenance operations with a team of operators/laborers for highway maintenance contracts is a PLUS
  • Excellent communication skills, strong leadership skills and ability to positively motivate business development and marketing staff and clients
  • Public speaking and presentation skills required
  • Knowledge of infrastructure construction standards including scheduling, contracts, coordinating and managing all disciplines and subcontractors
  • Competent in the use of computer software applications used for project control and administration, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, Access and Outlook
  • Travel through the northern territories is required #LI-DL1

  • Absent an approved exemption, due to federal, state, local, provincial and/or client-requirements, this position may require an individual to be fully vaccinated by a Health Canada-approved or authorized COVID-19 vaccine or undergo weekly testing upon hire and as a condition of continued employment.
