Risk Advisory Services

Our Assurance and Business Services practice provides a range of services including external audit, risk advisory, finance due diligence, valuations, management accounts and payroll services to a diverse client base ranging from small businesses and startups to substantial international groups. Our client portfolio includes businesses from a variety of different industry sectors, across private and AIM listed companies to financial services and not for profit.

Our Risk Advisory practice helps our clients manage risk and uncertainty by providing a broad range of services that allow our clients to better measure, manage and control risk; to gain and receive meaningful assurance; and to enhance the reliability of systems and processes throughout their organisation.

Role Profile

Purpose of role:

We are looking for individuals with the drive and charisma to want to have a lead role in establishing and growing our Risk Advisory capability. Smith and Williamson is on an exciting journey, it is seeking to break the mould of professional services firms, to be unique in its offering and radical in its approach. We want to work with like-minded individuals who will value our clients and thrive on the impact their services can provide.

This is an exciting and senior role in a developing practice, and you will be helping to shape the strategy and build a team to deliver to our clients. Within this role, you will be expected to develop a personal marketing approach, having ideas to build networks, raise the profile of S&W in existing and new markets, and to manage a portfolio of clients.

We are looking for candidates from a diverse range of backgrounds, but who have an enthusiasm and passion to what they do; have the ability to apply their experience to intelligent solutions to the organisations they work with. Broad experience of risk and control mechanisms, from controls assurance to controls transformation, risk-based internal audit to risk management guidance and advice, your ability to operate and lead will be built on a strong methodological base.

You will be joining a growing, successful professional services team with a strong emphasis on its people and their development. You will work with some of the UK’s most interesting companies, and will have a role shaping the future of our Risk Advisory practice, working in collaboration within Assurance and Business Services and the wider Smith & Williamson firm, sharing of ideas, developing solutions. The role will operate nationally, with the initial focus being London, the South East and the South West. 

Reports to: Partner, Risk Advisory

Key responsibilities:

Business/Practise Development

  • To support and lead on the development of service propositions and building campaigns to both market and build awareness and networks.
  • Lead on the development of novel and innovative proposals for new work, attendance at marketing events, development of personal contacts and identification and development of opportunities for S&W with current clients. 
  • To develop and undertake a continuous marketing programme which delivers further work for the firm.
  • Client Relationship

  • Take a lead role to develop strong client relationships, ensure they receive an efficient and proactive service and that client expectations are met.
  • To add value to the client relationship, identifying and developing opportunities to improve the clients’ businesses and/or develop additional services for S&W.
  • Technical

  • Leading and supporting the development of Risk Advisory propositions and our approach with clients. 
  • Awareness of commercial aspects of the clients’ businesses and impact on our work. Leading on all aspects of delivery.
  • Demonstrate leadership in supporting the technical development of the team delivering the Risk Advisory services.
  • Oversee and lead on the client administration processes, including client take-on processes; managing firm risk and managing client billing.
  • Staff Management

  • Play a pivotal role in building and developing the Risk Advisory team, identifying training and development needs and taking a leadership role in building capacity and capability.
  • To delegate appropriate work and provide appropriate mentoring to more junior staff, aiding their development.
  • Have a clear leadership role, playing a key role in leading and supporting the team.
  • Training and development

  • To ensure assessment forms are completed and feedback given to staff on all jobs. Ensuring appropriate in house and external training received personally.
  • Key Competencies:

  • Planning and organising - to ensure all client work is carried out within the appropriate timescales through continual monitoring of progression of the work.
  • Technical expertise – strong background in core and related Risk Advisory methodologies. The ability to translate this into clear scopes and terms of reference and be able to oversee and lead on delivery. To be able to answer staff and client technical queries and make technical decisions.
  • Commercial awareness - to have a good understanding of the commercial factors affecting the client and to be able to monitor the commercial effectiveness of work done by S&W by reviewing costs against budget.
  • Teamwork - working as a team with Senior Managers, Partners and staff to ensure the department as a whole meets its objectives and all client demands are exceeded and dealing with differences.
  • Problem solving - technical knowledge to resolve client issues and organisation to be flexible to meet client and director demands.
  • Customer focus - ensuring clients expectations are exceeded, by providing a first class service at all times.
  • Business Development – ability to develop trusted advisor status with clients
  • Candidate Profile


  • Appropriate professional qualifications (ACA, CA, ACCA; CIA; CIIA; CISSP; CISA).
  • Key Experience/Skills:

  • Experience or ability to work across a range of sectors
  • Experience of (and appetite for) business development activities such as targeting, preparation of proposal documents, proposal presentations and attendance of networking events
  • Good working knowledge of skill requirements of staff at various levels to ensure work undertaken by appropriate individual.
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to lead and manage/motivate team.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise to meet the needs of clients, partners and staff.
  • Ability to manage to time/budget
