Newmont Suriname was established in 2004 as an entity of Newmont Mining Corporation and is headquartered in Paramaribo, Suriname. Located in South America, Suriname was originally settled as a Dutch colony, is very culturally diverse and enjoys a tropical climate. The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Strong support from host communities and the government of Suriname strengthen Merian's ability to deliver safe, profitable production with significant upside potential and opportunity for employees, host communities and shareholders.
The ASM Representative II will provide administrative and field support to the ASM Chief and support in the development, and maintenance of the relationships with the external stakeholders. The role will consist of supporting in the execution of Newmont Suriname ASM strategy and implementation of practices that align with the global ASM strategy including engagement planning. This includes planning, execution and reporting on the broad range of stakeholder engagement and management in regards to small scale mining in all the areas where Newmont have mining activities in Suriname. The role will be focused on major activities at either our Merian, Amazonia or Sabajo site with additional support on our exploration activities.
Support in the implementation of the Newmont Suriname ASM strategy that reflects regional needs and aligns with the Newmont Global ASM strategy as well as relevant policies and standards.
Training & Experience
Support in the implementation of projects in order to achieve the objectives of the Newmont Suriname ASM strategy.
Consult with relevant stakeholders, i.e., relevant local government agencies, small-scale mining associations, etc., in the implementation of the ASM strategy.
Support ASM groups in building their capacities to mobilize miners in support of engagement and responsible mining.
Identify and manage training and capacity building requirements to support ASM engagement strategies.
Project the Company’s image to ASM communities through regular engagements.
Liaise with and prepare ASM for engagement with the Company including associated logistical support
Monitor adherence to the business process in all ASM department activities.
Monitor and manage and report possible ASM community complaints and expectations.
Identify and manage social risk issues associated with the company’s operations and relationship with Small scale Miners.
Liaise with ASM communities on the decision, design and execution of alternative livelihood and technical support development projects and initiatives
Support in all ASM related activities at either our Merian, Amazonia or Sabajo site with additional support on exploration activities.
- The ASM Representative II is required to have a bachelor degree in social science.
- Must have experience in execution of programs and projects related to ASM.
- Experience and competence in multi-issue, complex problem identification and resolution is crucial.

- Exceptional oral and written communication skills required in English and Dutch.
- Extensive experience in dealing with people in a cross cultural environment.
- Administrative experience is an asset

- The ASM Rep II works in both an office environment as well as in the field.
- Must wear personal protective equipment including, steel toe shoes, long sleeve shirts and any other equipment to perform duties safely as determined by the Health and Safety plan
