The Director, Microgrid Operations Position

Sunnova Energy is searching for a Director of Microgrid Operations to join its’ Energy Service team and be responsible for developing and maintaining microgrids that bring energy independence to communities and campuses across the U.S. This position will work cross-functionally to construct new microgrid systems and operate them to achieve operating targets. The Director of Microgrid Operations will collaborate with dedicated in-house power systems, engineering resources, and Sunnova IT to support design, development and implementation of microgrids, and will collaborate with the Sunnova Grid Services’ team and regional developers that have partnered with Sunnova. As the sales in this market space grows, the Director will build a team of both employees and vendor resources to perform 24/7 service and maintenance operations.



 

Director, Microgrid Operations Responsibilities

  • Leads Sunnova’s Microgrid operation including new construction, preventative maintenance, and unplanned maintenance operations
  • Creates and implements microgrid operation, including installation, equipment selection, and ongoing preventative and unplanned maintenance strategies
  • Maintains awareness of industry standards and changes 
  • Coordinates communication across internal departments, third party contractors and customers to facilitate construction and maintenance of microgrids 
  • Responsible for microgrid project financial performance 
  • Develops and implements preventative maintenance plans for microgrid systems
  • Develops and implements unplanned maintenance operating plan for microgrid systems
  • Create operating plans for maintaining generation and distribution services of microgrid for 24/7 operation

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or applicable area of focus
  • Ideal candidate comes from a microgrid/power operation firm
  • Capable of end-to-end power systems and project ownership from concept-to-construction through commissioning
  • 10+ years’ experience developing, designing, constructing and or maintaining energy systems
  • Experience working with backup power, UPS, power systems, grid connectivity, microgrids, DER
  • 6-8 years’ manager experience with multiple reports
  • 5+ years’ senior manager experience with multiple reports
  • Experience leading teams and cultivating future leaders in a high-performing, goal-oriented environment
  • Strong and proven project management experience 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in business or engineering
  • Corporate or business development experience

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite including Excel and PowerPoint
  • Analytical thinker with hands on modeling experience
  • Thrives in a challenging and fast-paced workplace and industry
  • Very strong decision-making, organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written with ability to influence others and drive consensus
  • Ability to move priorities forward, takes ownership of responsibilities with little supervision in a matrixed organization
  • Key knowledge areas of energy generation services, energy distribution, and demand response

Working Conditions

  • In office, open-office environment, not a remote position
  • Estimated travel time of 10% or less
