Purpose

New York Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a five-year Avangrid project with a budget of ~$500 million and is considered essential for grid modernization. The NY AMI project includes replacing existing electric meters (1.3 million) and upgrading gas meters (600,000) with smart devices and implementing systems and processes to provide two-way communication with smart meters. AMI will provide near real-time meter data to improve Avangrid customer service, support power restoration efforts, improve power quality, and further enable energy conservation efforts.

This position will start with the NY AMI project team then seamlessly transition to the Smart Metering department, which is currently responsible for the strategy, operation and compliance of metering systems in Maine and Connecticut. This position will report to the Manager of Smart Metering for Avangrid’s New York-based operations throughout. The selected person will perform daily operations related to the AMI Head End System (HES), develop reports using data contained within the AMI HES to troubleshoot meter data and infrastructure problems, and process and analyze meter data for customer service, web portals, and the AMI HES to the Meter Data Management System (MDMS) integration. The selected person will join a team of technical systems and metering experts across New York, Maine, and Connecticut, and collaborate with other groups across Avangrid, including Corporate IT, Telecommunications, Control & Automation Systems, Electric Operations, Customer Service, and Innovation.



Responsibilities

  • Support the overall state of meter reading collection within the NY AMI HES including the monitoring of daily reads.
  • Support extraction, cleansing, validation and analysis of large data sets while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail leveraging XML, Excel, SQL/Oracle queries or similar programs.
  • Perform daily data operations in SAP, AMI HES, MDMS and other systems.
  • Produce specific AMI HES data requests or ad-hoc system operation reports to internal users.
  • Proactively support identification of moderate to complex problems including data anomalies, evidence of network connectivity risks, meter failures, alarms and events.
  • Submit trouble tickets in various systems to alert groups such as IT, OSG Infrastructure, and Telecommunications.
  • Support AMI HES testing for both technical upgrades and Disaster Recovery.
  • Supports the development of AMI operating procedures and other business process documentation.


Skills and Requirements

  • Associates Degree and relevant work experience required. 
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Information Technology or Statistics, or a minimum of 5 years’ experience with computer related systems preferred.
  • Technical background and experience in one or more of the following preferred: 
    • Technical Hardware Architecture.
    • Operating Systems (e.g., Linux/Unix, Windows Server) and creating .NET web services running on Microsoft’s IIS.
    • Networking and topology / understanding of high-level network and security concepts, radio networks, cellular networks, firmware updates, FCC regulations.
    • Network functionality and tools including SSH, traceroute, ping, understanding of DHCP, VPN technologies, firewall concepts and architecture.
    • Relational DBMS (i.e., Oracle, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server).
    • Programming languages (e.g., C++, Python, Java, JavaScript, R, Perl).
    • ESRI’s Geographic Information System (GIS).
    • AMI Head-end Systems, Meter Data Management Systems, MV-90 xi, and/or related metering systems.
    • Information systems experience utilizing ITIL principles.
    • Experience in development of reports and dashboards with Microsoft Power BI.
    • Experience with Document Management Systems administration.
  • Familiarity with SAP and or ServiceNow applications preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Knowledge of electric and/or gas utility operations preferred.
  • Previous work experience in IT, operational telecom, data analytics, or network or systems engineering preferred. 
  • Must possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and the ability to work well and interact with other team members.
  • Must possess strong problem-solving, leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Must possess critical thinking skills and ability to adapt to rapid project changes.
  • Demonstrated track record of learning new technologies and systems, building cross-functional relationships with key stakeholders, and solving complex technical issues preferred.
