This position involves (a) deploying high-fidelity flow simulation software on complex geometries and (b) applying state-of-the-art tools in model reduction, machine learning and design optimization, primarily to model unsteady turbulent combustion phenomena in engineering devices. There will be applications in several other areas of aerospace propulsion. The successful applicant will work in a team of researchers active in the areas of computational combustion, propulsion system development and laboratory testing. There will be opportunities to interact with leading researchers in applied mathematics and aerospace engineering in academia and industry.

Must be a US citizen
Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen
Must be able to obtain a Security Clearance




Minimum Education: MS preferred, but a BS in mechanical/aerospace/chemical engineering with a strong background in gas dynamics, computational fluid mechanics, machine learning, and data assimilation is acceptable.


Experience/ Training:

Desirable: Experience in modeling turbulent reacting flows. Familiarity with parallel computations, machine learning algorithms, CAD, and grid-generation skills.

Computers: LINUX environments, Python, FORTRAN, ICEM, Tecplot/Paraview (as many as possible)

The successful applicant will also be expected to work closely with companion experimental efforts also underway in the group.

Travel – Travel to conferences and program reviews (<5%)


Equipment – Workstations


Tools Used in Trade – Software, as noted.


Attendance – No overtime unless required for the project.  Work schedule (9 hours 4 days 8 hours every other Friday, 0 hours every other Friday)


Shift – 1st


Necessity for Regular Attendance – Yes


Urgency for Punctuality – Yes


Other Essential Functions

The candidate shall be able to operate in a team environment, and shall have good interpersonal, reporting and communication skills (written and verbal).  Collaboration with external research groups, participation in technical symposia, publishing in referred journals, and maintaining a strong international reputation are expected.
