Sr. Controls Systems Engineer

POSITION: Control Systems Engineer GENERAL PURPOSE:  

Provides high level of expertise and guidance as part of an owner capital project team in the scope development, design, construction, commissioning and startup of a large greenfield chemical processing facility.  

Focus will be definition, design, installation, and startup of the overall controls, automation, and communication systems scope for the project.  

Execute the Project Facilities at consistent with published project objectives and Company principles, to verify that the Contractors perform engineering/design, procurement/fabrication, construction and pre-commissioning services in accordance with contractual requirements, including specifications and standards to monitor and appraise contractor organization, planned, and performance in the broad disciplines of detailed design, drafting, purchasing, progress measurement, schedule control, and such engineering activities and to ensure that the project achieves established objectives in keeping with Project Execution Plan and Company expectations, engineering practices, procedures, and standards.  

This position may be embedded in the contractor's engineering office during Process Design Package (PDP), FEED and/or detailed engineering phases, will be remote during the early phases, and may transition to the site during construction as required.  

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

• The principal function of the Control System Engineer is to provide control systems  

engineering expertise and know-how at state-of-the-art levels to successfully  

complete the capital investment program consistent with Company objectives and  

technical requirements during engineering/design, procurement/fabrication,  

construction and pre-commissioning of the project.  

• Responsible for advising the Engineering Manager, Construction Manager and  

Project Manager of deviations from control system design, and/or installation  

standards, specifications, drawings, etc. Industry codes and standards, and  

applicable procedures as well as input to resolution of non-conformance  

• Ensure that technical quality, physical integrity and operational performance of  

control system designs, installations and pre-commissioning activities meet Project  

Execution Plan objectives and specifications as well as Company needs and  

requirements.  

• Provide the primary source of Control System technical expertise and know-how that  

is available to project engineering managers to ensure complete appraisal of  

Contractor performance (whether related to engineering/design office or field  

issues).  

• Adopt, maintain and apply a set of Company procedures for technical reviews,  

equipment selection, quality, safety, and operability checks and standards for  

engineering design to be incorporated into contractual requirements as Detailed  

Engineering specifications and drawings.  

• Adopt, maintain, and apply Company control systems requirements in a set of supplemental standards, design and installation/ pre-commissioning practices consistent with Company engineering procedures and standards.  

• Provide expertise to ensure effective monitoring and appraisal (quality assurance of  

engineering/design, procurement/fabrication, and installation and precommissioning ) of Contractor performance to ensure compliance with contractual requirements.  

• Maintain and communicate to the Engineering Manager and Project Manager control system technical requirements and information to allow the Company to maintain design and installations consistent with established standards and specifications.  

• Comply with applicable Laws, Regulations and Company engineering, construction and pre-commissioning procedures and standards.  

• Maintain the highest level of expertise in this technical specialist area in order to carry out the initial capital investment program of the Company within their assigned Contract Package area.  

• Deal with instrumentation and/or electrical engineering, installation and precommissioning issues, solutions complexities, and difficulties throughout the life span of the capital investment program in order to meet Company expectations.

of the time.

• Hands on, involved in meetings, talk and engage with Users, boots on the  

ground. Able to communicate at all levels.  

• Agile/adaptable/flexible: able to handle multiple projects with multiple deadlines,  

demonstrating ability to prioritize between what is urgent and what is important.  

• Ability to lead/influence and be part of multilevel, cross functional teams.  

• Proactively identify opportunities for improvement across the plant in relation to  

process, equipment, facilities and staffing to drive implementation in a spirit of  

continuous improvement.  

Minimum Education Experience/Specific Knowledge Requirements:  

• Bachelor's degree in Applicable Engineering program from an accredited institution.  

• 15 yrs of experience as a controls systems engineer and/or designer  

• Experience using the ISA95 stack to connect plant devices to cloud analytics  

driving value to Operations  

• Expertise across ISA-95 stack, especially Levels 0-2 are a must (Sensors/Actuators,  

PLC/DCS, SCADA/HMI) ... Levels 3 (MES/MOM) desirable ... Levels 4+ a definite  

plus  

• Working knowledge of operations-related SAP modules (PM, QM, PP/DS)  

• Digital Twins, Performance Boards, Simulation  

• Industry 4.0, IIoT, Plant Connectivity  

• Working knowledge of RFID/Asset Tracking for plant  

• Proficiency with MS Office applications that may include but are not limited to  

Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, MS Project, and Outlook
