We currently have an opening at our Foothill Ranch, CA (Orange County) facility for a Jr. Computational Scientist. The successful candidate will make technical contributions to a team effort to use computer simulations to advance scientific understanding of the physics of fusion plasmas in the field-reversed configuration.  Goals will include physical interpretation of existing experimental results, and prediction and optimization of future operating conditions. This is a full-time position with a rich compensation package.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This is an entry level position supporting plasma fusion research in the Computation department of TAE Technologies’ Fusion Power research division.
  • Responsibilities will include:
  • Improvement and automation of workflow and job dispatch methods in parallel computing environments using scripting languages and SLURM.
  • Improvement and automation of data reduction, analysis, and visualization methods.
  • Refactoring and optimization of compiled codes
  • Participate in simulation campaign planning and project management with the goal of determining a goal-oriented simulation strategy and its execution
  • Contribute to code planning, development, performance and reliability efforts
  • As a simulation code operator, perform simulation campaigns to support scientific discovery through interpretive simulation of experimental results and predictive simulation of future experiments. This will include code configuration, job dispatch and monitoring, data reduction, analysis, visualization, and presentation of results to the TAE physics team.
  • Documentation of work in collaboration and revision control software

 

Required Skills:

  • Up to 5 years of experience
  • Demonstrated contributions to team work on long term research projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and schedule work to meet deadlines.
  • Experience presenting reports of scientific or technical progress at national level
  • The successful candidate will be expected to continually sharpen their skills, learn new methods, and stay current with advances in HPC and plasma physics simulation.

Technical Experience:

  • Previous hands-on software development (> 1 year) in Fortran or C++ is required.
  • Development of scientific code in collaborative environment, especially using paradigms used routinely in plasma physics, such as Monte Carlo, particle-in-cell, magnetohydrodynamics
  • Discretization of differential equations and solution of discretized equations using numerical methods

Software Knowledge and Skills:

  • Python and Bash scripting languages
  • Fortran and/or C++ development experience
  • High Performance Computing experience, especially, parallel programming experience on distributed memory, shared memory, or accelerator architecture
  • Visualization with python libraries, paraview, Visit
  • Collaboration and revision control software experience.
  • MS Office Applications

Education:

Required Education:

  • Bachelor of Science or BA (Science) with major in physics, applied math, or computer science

Preferred Education:

  • Master of Science in physics, applied math, or computer science
