Overview

An opportunity has arisen for a suitably experienced civil or structural engineer to undertake a pivotal role in assisting in the development and growth of the Ridge London structural engineering team. Reporting to the London Civil and Structural Engineering Group Partner, the person concerned will share responsibility for leading a growing team of engineers and technicians in the delivery of several projects to agreed time, quality and cost constraints and for helping to develop new business. Prospective candidates are likely to be Chartered, hold a senior position in their current company and be involved in the development of new business.

Role and Responsibilities

Team management and development

  • Assist Partner in marketing and business development of the Structural Engineering Team
  • Assist Partner in assessing design costs and fees
  • Prepare formal technical proposals and fee bids
  • Take briefs from internal and external clients
  • Assist Partner in planning resource requirements
  • Supervise and mentor engineers and technicians in the team
  • Assist Partner in preparing monthly business reports and invoicing
  • Assist in the selection and recruitment process for engineering and technician staff
  • Project and Technical

  • Manage projects from inception to completion to ensure that deliverables are issued to programme, to the required quality standard and within the agreed budget
  • Prepare design programmes for the production of deliverables
  • Liaise with clients, design teams and contractors as representative of the London Civil and Structural Engineering Team
  • Act as lead or sole designer, as appropriate to size of the particular project
  • Undertake scheme and detailed design as appropriate on individual projects
  • Prepare reports, general correspondence, etc as required in connection with the running of projects
  • Undertake surveys and inspections and produce written reports in good English on findings with appropriate recommendations
  • Ensure that Ridge Integrated Management System procedures are followed
  • Experience and Skills Required

    Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • First Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer
  • Member of Institution of Civil Engineers or Institution of Structural Engineers
  • Significant experience in design office
  • Significant experience on building structures projects in UK
  • Experience in team leader role
  • Involved in marketing and securing new work
  • Considerable experience of running projects
  • Competent and reliable designer in structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, masonry and timber
  • Detailed experience of framed building design in rc and steelwork
  • Detailed experience of traditionally constructed buildings
  • Experience of refurbishment and change of use
  • Able to produce written reports in good English
  • Proficient in the use of analysis and design software (Fastrak, TEDDS, Orion, etc)
  • Essential Personal Skills

  • Able to work with minimal supervision but provider of continual feedback to line manager
  • Excellent communicator
  • Good leadership and people management skills
  • Team worker
  • Able to work on own initiative but accept guidance or constructive criticism
  • Hold current UK driving licence
  • Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Existing Client contacts who may transfer allegiance to Ridge
  • Additional postgraduate qualifications
  • Member of other relevant professional institutions
  • Involvement in professional development of others
  • Specialist technical knowledge
