Job Summary

Position is for Wyoming, Colorado and Northern New Mexico 

The Motorhand, Derrickhand, Relief Driller

$27.00 - $34.00 an hour

Specific Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Works in a safe, healthy and environmentally protective manner
  • Checks and maintains all equipment in the mud system; is responsible for housekeeping of mud system
  • Controls mud properties and mud volume in consultation with the Mud Engineer and Driller; this includes mixing mud and chemicals with the assistance of other rig crew
  • Provides proper maintenance and operation of the mud pump(s) on the rig
  • Maintains mud equipment parts inventory, as well as mud materials
  • Handles drill pipe and drill collars, while working derrick, laying down pipe, and running casing
  • Greases crown, blocks, shale shaker, winchline, sandline and tong line sheaves and checks crown-o-matic, escape line, etc.
  • Maintains all safety belts and ropes in derrick and checks derrick pins, safety pins, electrical cords and lights, ladder and derrick cages, and all safety devices in area where they and their co-workers work
  • Operates Iron Derrickman safely while tripping and making connections, on rigs equipped with Iron Derrickman
  • Reports any unusual change in mud level or properties and if well starts to kick, readies proper equipment
  • Provides close supervision for Floorhand, giving instructions and training, while ensuring good work practices
  • Reports and corrects any unsafe work practices and safety hazards
  • Informs relief, at shift change, of both routine and unusual information regarding the job
  • Works with the Rig Manager and Driller to ensure compliance with Safety rules by all rig crew members
  • Participates in all safety programs, processes and requirements
  • Attends Operations Training up to two times per year and up to five days per training at designated locations
  • Performs other duties as directed by management


This employee must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • pass a post-offer physical examination, fitness testing, safety aptitude test, drug tests & background check
  • provide proof of and maintain proper legal authorization to work in the United States
  • arrange for reliable transportation to and from work and training locations
  • speak and read English well enough  to understand verbal and written safety postings, alerts and announcements, communicate with co-workers and be able to participate in job safety analysis meetings

Technical Competencies

  • Understands and is capable of reading all safety / training requirements and materials
  • Understands and knows the current volume and characteristics of mud in system, e.g. volume of mud in tanks and water being run in
  • Understands role fully in the event of a kick or blow out, including calculating maximum casing allowance back pressure
  • Knows current mechanical condition of mud system components, e.g. pumps including setting of pop valves and pump liners, shale shaker screens and correctly reacting to wear, or unsafe conditions
  • Knows how and is capable of performing basic mud properties tests, e.g. density, water loss, filter cake, pH
  • Knows duties and responsibilities of Floorhand and Motorhand so he can function as a resource for these crew members
  • Develops and exhibits competency of all Derrickhand “Global Skills”

Education and Experience

  • Two - three years of experience as a Floorhand and Motorhand or Rig Manager discretion based on related experience and performance
  • High School diploma or GED is preferred

Other Accountabilities

  • Business Ethics – Understands fully Ensign’s ethics policy and its application in all business dealings including contractual agreements and contract negotiations
  • Business Policies - Understands and agrees to follow all of Ensign’s Policy and Directives and procedures as set forth in the Ensign Company Policy and Basic Directives Handbook for Employees
  • Certifications – Maintains technical and safety certifications required by company or government agencies; remains current on all OSHA, EUSD and other required training
  • Drug-free workplace - Conforms to a drug-free workplace, not be under the influence of mind-altering prescription or non-prescription drugs, including alcohol and other drugs of abuse.
  • Occupational Health and Safety – Understands fully the Ensign Health and Safety policy and self-responsibility for own health and safety at work; Demonstrates responsibility to avoid adversely affecting the health and safety of others through any act or omission
    • Uses the correct protective clothing and equipment as provided by Ensign and guards against misuse or damage to such equipment
    • Reports any hazardous situations arising in the workplace that cannot be self-corrected, or injury incurred during the course of work, no matter how minor
    • Avoids injury resulting from manual handling tasks, by use of risk assessment, correct mechanical handling equipment and correct manual handling techniques
