JOB SUMMARY

The Technology & Breakthrough Innovation (TBI) team drives the creation of new product solutions for S&C's customers by exploiting new technologies and enabling breakthrough product development for the fast-evolving intelligent grid ([ Link removed ] ). Technically sophisticated on the inside, S&C’s future systems must deliver unparalleled user experience, outstanding long term value, and profitable revenue streams. This role works with a new technology development team with specialized laboratory and testing facilities.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Creating innovative designs of robust electromagnetic and mechanical machines for power switchgear and ancillary equipment
  • Generating quality work products as part of small teams responsible for mechanical & system design, packaging, and testing
  • Creating conceptual and prototype mechanical systems using 3D CAD with the calculations and analysis to support the ideas
  • Presenting compelling ideas and findings to management and engineers throughout the company
  • Preparing necessary design models, drawings and prototype requests to create test vehicles
  • Supporting other engineers on the team in the candidate’s areas of expertise
  • Participation in and contribution to DFMEA, PFMEA, and DFMA practices and events
  • Writing functional specifications, hardware test plans, and design documentation
  • Traveling to outside labs, customer, and supplier facilities as needed
  • Identifying and solving complex problems with focus on both short- and long-term implications
  • Working across departments with experts throughout the company to complete the product lifecycle
  • Researching and defining customer problems leading to new and innovative solutions

To select this job as one of interest to you, at a minimum, you must have the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Master's Degree and/or PhD a plus
  • At least 6 years of engineering design experience
  • Experience in product design related to:
    • brand new concepts and/or products
    • across all stages of the development process, from concepts evaluation to production
    • 20+ year deployment in demanding environments
    • electromagnetic actuator and/or mechanism/machine design
  • Intermediate level experience in the following:
    • DFMEA, Design of Experiments, and DFMA
    • 2D and 3D CAD (SolidEdge preferred)
    • Selection of materials, finishes, and manufacturing processes (both traditional and developing)
    • Analysis with ANSYS Mechanical, MATLAB; ANSYS Maxwell preferred; other analysis capabilities a plus
    • Tolerance & sensitivity analyses, basic draft dimensioning, and GD&T
    • Industrial design (aesthetics, ergonomics, and product usability) preferred
  • Top notch computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to build and grow professional relationships whether in-person or remote
  • Eagerness to uncover unknown customer problems through analysis and observation that can be solved with new and innovative products and solutions

MAJOR PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

  • Standing: Occasionally, tasks are performed in a standing position. 
  • Lifting: Occasional lifting of items ranging in weight from 5 lbs. to 40 lbs. 
  • Walking: Frequent walking of moderate distances (<1/8 mile). 
  • Carrying: Occasional carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs. 
  • Pushing: Occasional pushing in support of various production operations. 
  • Pulling: Occasional pulling in support of various production operations. 
  • Bending: Occasional bending to perform a variety of job tasks. 
  • Reaching: Occasional bending in support of various production and office operations. 
  • Handling: Occasional handling of parts (all sizes). 
  • Other: Daily keyboard operation associated with PC and terminal applications.
