Instrument Engineer - 12 Month Contract Norwich
NES Fircroft are working with a major engineering client of ours based in Norwich. They are looking for an Instrument Engineer to work with them on an initial 12 month basis.
This is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic individual to work as part of our Projects Engineering team based in Norwich.
The Instrument Engineer will be responsible for delivery of the Instrument scopes for the project portfolio. This role will report directly to the Instrument Lead Engineer within the Projects Department.
This is a 12-month contract position working Monday to Friday.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Controller Loop Tuning
The purpose of this element is to assess the ability of the candidate to identify hazards associated with controller loop tuning, to identify the means of collating the data needed to perform tuning and to verify the means to define a change has been an improvement.
Specification and Installation of Final Elements
This element assessment guide is to assess the candidate's ability to specify, coordinate the installation and specify the maintenance to final elements. Final elements are the valves and trips associated with SIF loops and ESD systems.
Specification and Selection of Sensing Elements
This element is to assess the candidate's ability to select, specify and assign the maintenance to sensing elements for safety and control systems.
ESD, DCS, F&G and Metering Systems
The purpose of this element is to assess the ability of the candidate to identify the procedures and standards involved in the management and implementation of system modifications both offshore and onshore. The candidate should also demonstrate an understanding of the key stages and elements of system design, implementation, and management - these being:
Instrumentation in Hazardous Areas
This element is to assess the candidate's knowledge of the main concepts of ATEX protection in instrumentation both for Electrical ATEX and Mechanical ATEX.

- Preparation of Instrument system design documents (specifications, datasheets, equipment lists, I/O Schedules, drawings etc.)
- Provide input into multi-disciplinary reviews (P&IDs, C&Es, datasheets etc.)
- Specify, select and procure replacement and/or upgrades to instrument equipment and carrying out the necessary risk assessments, safety studies and following documentation update procedure
- Monitor performance of instrument equipment through routine review of maintenance records and contributing to the continuous improvement of the discipline Maintenance Strategy and Performance Standard documents
- Ensure all work activities carried out within the discipline meets the relevant statutory and regulatory requirements, recognising safe-guard interface with other disciplines
- Participate in safety studies such as HAZOPs, LOPAs and practical interfaces such as FATs, Constructability Reviews, etc
- Support the implementation of Functional Safety Audits through the Project lifecycle.
- To conduct site surveys on offshore or onshore assets
- To produce calculations required for the role and participate in design reviews
- Provide checking and approval of discipline documents, complete interdisciplinary checking of documents where necessary
- Production of discipline documentation deliverables for inclusion in work packs
- Production of vendor specifications for modifications to control systems and hydraulic/pneumatic power units

- Signal conditioning for sensors and initiating elements
- Failure modes and actuation methods for solenoid valves and final elements
- Proof testing and maintenance
- Validation of C&E
- Describe the key stages in Fire and Gas design, implementation, and management
- Describe, methods of detection both flame, gas and gas leaks and the use of these signals in the control system.

- Alarm Management Systems or equivalent
- Hydraulic Awareness
- F&G Awareness
- SUEPEE & Intrinsic Safety
- TUV Functional Safety Engineer
- Ideally a Chartered Engineer or qualified to a minimum of HNC/HND level
- Ideally 5-10 years' experience within the Oil & Gas Industry
- Strong operational knowledge of the offshore and onshore gas business
- BOSIET or FOET offshore training
