The energy industry in Colombia
Colombia ranks 23rd in the world in terms of oil production and ranks 34th in terms of oil reserves and the industry is mainly located in the northwest and centre of the country. The production is well-supported by two large oil pipelines; the Cano Limon-Covenas pipeline and the Bicentenario pipeline. Colombia also has a well-established renewable sector with hydroelectric power providing 70% of the country’s power generation and the country has recently been investing heavily in wind power also. In regards to mining, Colombia has the largest coal reserves in Latin America and they also mine emeralds, gold and nickel. In total, mineral mining accounts for 5% of the country’s GDP.
