The energy industry in Argentina
Argentina is the 23rd largest oil-producing country in the world and has the 4th largest reserves in South America. Although a relatively small player in the industry, the recent exploration of the Vaca Muerta has created a significant excitement in the region and gained investment from the likes of Shell, Exxon Mobil Corp. and ConocoPhillips due to the shale potential. The industry will be keeping a close eye on the region over the next few years to see if it lives up to its’ potential. When it comes to renewables, the country only gets 2% of its electricity from renewable sources but in recognition of this poor number, the government is targeting an increase to 20% by 2025. The country is also an important mining nation in the region, with strengths in copper, lead, zinc, aluminium, silver and gold.
