Principal Telecom Engineer in ENG-London, United Kingdom

Job Overview:
General Description includes complex telecommunication systems engineering design, analysis and development of an assigned scope of work in a McDermott project. Work includes, among other things, conceptual studies, cost and planning studies, layouts, design calculations, specification development and supervising vendor packages. Is able to effectively communicate complex technical solutions and concepts to other engineers and non-engineers. Assists with training other engineers by providing instruction on new technologies and/or a specialization. Supports the development of new technologies and methods. Is the highest level Engineer position and looked to for technical expertise. Maintains and promotes a focus on McDermotts end product whether engineering, fabrication or construction. Ensures effective communications among other engineering disciplines. Ensures effective management of change. Assumes responsibility for cost, schedule, quantity and budget control.
Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
  • As a senior member of the I&C department working within the telecommunications discipline, the key objective will be to carry out his/her assigned duties and responsibilities in a professional manner and to a high standard in accordance with corporate and project standards and procedures.
  • To provide technical expertise and support corporately and/or within dedicated project teams to ensure the technical integrity of telecommunication and security system design and engineering. 
  • To successfully manage and co-ordinate a dedicated team of discipline engineers and designers to meet the technical, cost and schedule requirements on an assigned project. 
  • To provide supervision, technical support and guidance to subordinate engineers and designers.
  • Corporate line responsibility to the Chief I&C Engineer who will identify specific engineering tasks within the discipline group and/or assign the discipline engineer to a suitable position within a dedicated project team.
  • Must be capable of working in a dynamic EPC Lump Sum project environment driven by contractual agreements, schedules and milestones and feel comfortable taking both technical and project control (manpower, schedule, cost) type responsibilities.
  • For project based working as a Lead Engineer, duties and responsibilities will extend beyond ensuring the technical integrity of the engineering and design and shall include accountability for project control activities within his/her discipline area. 
  • The technical integrity of the engineering and design shall typically include:
    • Defining the telecommunication and security system philosophy and technologies to be used.
    • Checking and approval of in-house design drawings, specifications, philosophies, studies, requisitions, technical evaluations and general documentation for  telecommunication and security system equipment .etc.
    • Supervision, support and guidance of subordinate engineers and designers.
    • Review, checking and approval of third party drawings and documentation for all types of telecommunications and security system equipment.
    • Co-ordination meetings and liaison with third parties including clients and vendors.
    • Inspection, checking and witness testing of telecommunications and security system equipment at manufacturers works as necessary.
    • Engineering support during construction and commissioning phase activities.
  • The lead engineer will be expected to report, liaise and co-ordinate directly with other disciplines, the project manager and/or the engineering manager as necessary in order to satisfy the project requirements.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Engineering Degree
  • Corporate Membership of Professional Institution (Chartered Engineer)
  • Solid experience in contracting or related industries plus experience in a leading role in the contracting industry.
  • This experience must include all aspects of the particular technology engineering phases, from conceptual design to support for the Construction and Commissioning Groups.
  • This must also include the supervision of the other members of the group assigned both for technical adequacy of design and for control of man-hours and all associated costs.
  • They must be familiar with the application of current planning techniques and must be capable of formulating budgets and programs to cover their work content.
  • Experience in the contracting industry, preferably within petrochemical or oil & gas, plus experience in a related industry.
  • Proven ability in leading a team and working within multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of telecommunication and security systems.
  • Familiarity with specification and technical evaluation of key items of telecommunications and security  equipment and proven experience in selection of equipment and materials for operation in hazardous areas.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective supervisory experience of engineers and designers.
  • Proven ability in working effectively within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Results orientated within critical deadline driven areas of responsibility.
