Job Purpose

The Technical Superintendent is responsible for the management of technical operations of the assigned fleet. This includes, not limited to overseeing the daily operations of maintenance and repair, budgeting, classification (survey schedules), management of change required, on board general assessment of vessels, inspections and dry-docking.

Key Accountabilities

Technical

  • Ensure timely, detailed and accurate project, docking specifications and maintenance plans are prepared in conjunction with regional offices.
  • Control and manage Dockings, Special surveys, Upgrades, Modifications, Breakdowns, Major accidents / Incidents, Projects.
  • Travel internationally on short notice, to attend to vessel repairs, dry docking and survey
  • Liaise with Central Procurement in respect of sourcing cost effective spare parts and ensure that they are at the work site when required.
  • Perform fault finding and analysis of engines/machineries defect and repair
  • Review and ensure engineering designs/drawings, documentation and technical specifications are met
  • Maintain a good working relationship with regional offices to ensure effective communication and support is provided
  • Provide technical and operational support to regional vessels and regional onshore staff
  • Ensure IMCA guidelines and “best industry practices” are adhered to at all times
  • Support and monitor effective implementation on-board Planned Maintenance System (NSE) to ensure cost effective management of this function

Planning & Cost Control

  • Strictly control the technical costs of vessel repairs in line with the agreed budget/requirements and reporting any deviations to management
  • Oversee and provide input into the preparation of tender documents including establishing costs / budgets / programs and be part of subsequent bid / tender evaluations
  • Contribute to the appraisal and selection of repair yards and technical service providers

Reporting

  • Provide written daily project / Docking status reports to the SFTS, detailing activities, yard / contractor performance and recording any events which may be needed to support cost reductions and claims at a later date
  • Ensure all relevant information regarding a vessel repair / docking is updated in the PMS

Communication and Working Relationships

Internal - Technical Manager, Marine Superintendents, Other Regional Technical Superintendents and Managers, Port Engineers, Vessel crew, Procurement Manager, Project Manager, Legal and Insurance Dept.

External - Shipyard Management and Supervisors, Class Surveyors, Flag Administration Surveyors, Insurance Surveyors, Equipment Manufacturers and Service Engineers.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Unlimited STCW ’95 Chief Engineer’s license (Motor) sea going vessels or
  • Engineering degree/diploma in mechanical/electromechanical engineering

Minimum Experience:

  • Minimum 2-3 years’ shore experience in a similar position or 2-3 years’ sea-going work experience as Chief Engineer
  • Experience on AHTS / Offshore Supply / Offshore Tug / Dive Support Vessels / PSV or Construction Vessels
  • DP vessel experience will be highly advantageous

Job Specific Skills

  • Knowledge of Planned Maintenance System or Project Management Software
  • STCW Certificates must be valid at all times
  • Familiarity with ISM / ISPS is a must
  • Computer literacy with good knowledge of Microsoft office incl. MS Projects and CAD
