Principal Subsea Engineer in WA-Perth, Australia

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Person will be responsible for technical content and timely issue of all technical Subsea Umbilical and Controls deliverables. 
  • Scope includes specification and selection of Umbilical's and associated hardware, routing of Umbilical's, interfaces with Subsea Control System etc.
  • Performance of conceptual, FEED, and detailed analyses as per design basis, project specification, design codes and standards.
  • Assist Supply Chain procurement of discipline equipment, materials and services; ensuring that work produced complies with Customer requirements. Includes preparing, reviewing and approving requisitions, evaluating technical quotations and preparing queries, compiling bid tabulations and recommendations, preparing purchase requisitions, and expediting vendor documents.
  • Apply in-depth skills and knowledge of the business to address complex problems and non-standard situations.
  • Prepare clear and accurate detailed design calculations and analyses including design reports and procedures.
  • When acting as Lead Engineer:
  • Lead the Discipline engineering design of the assigned work area and complete within planned schedule and budget, in accordance with standards, MDR and project-specific procedures and to a high professional standard.
  • Plan, organize and direct all aspects of Discipline  execution on the assigned project including scope, deliverables, schedule and all manpower resources agree allocations with Discipline Manager.
  • Ensure interfaces and deliverables are clearly identified.
  • Maintain responsibility for progress and productivity, identifying any required corrective action.
  • Act as project representative for the Discipline during meetings with Project Team, Customer discipline lead and relevant agencies such as certifying authorities, auditors, third parties etc.
  • Lead small discipline team when applicable
  • Forecast and plan resource requirements
  • Become fully familiar with the project scope of work. Specifications, schedule and all inter-discipline requirements; including identifying concerns as early as practicable and taking appropriate initiatives to address issues. Interpret contractual requirements as they relate to engineering execution.
  • Identify changes to scope and promptly raise change notifications, including providing any necessary supporting documentation and estimates. Provide similar support for Variation Orders.
  • Interface with other departments to obtain input for Discipline designs and drawings and to develop clash free designs.
  • Maintain close co-ordination with other engineering disciplines, Planning, Fabrication, Marine, and Project Management.
  • Document substantive communications (communications that result in significant decisions or assignment actions) and forward copies to Discipline Lead Engineer and Discipline Manager.
  • Prepare estimates for bid proposals, including technical query reviews, execution statements and manhour estimates, identifying software requirements and any other project specific requirements.
  • Raise technical queries to obtain missing information, clarify work scope, and to maintain preferred McDermott procedures, specifications, standard, practices and operational requirements.
  • Prepare, review, and (as Lead Engineer) approve Discipline engineering design basis, philosophies, and technical specifications.
  • Participate in finalizing deliverables lists and deliverables, ensuring compliance with specifications and functional integrity.
  • Review project schedule and fabrication schedule in relation to construction sequence, milestones, and engineering scope.
  • Attend project kickoff and review meetings, vendor meetings, engineering meetings and offshore site surveys, as required.
  • Provide technical direction and review of Designers producing products related to Automation & Instrumentation Engineering.
  • Prepare, review, and (as Lead Engineer) approve design reports and procedures.
  • Assist in providing necessary design inputs to other disciplines to enable them in proceeding with their deliverables.
  • Review and approve vendor and subcontractor submissions, checking for compliance with project specifications.
  • Review and (as Lead Engineer) approve design verification through single-discipline check  / inter-discipline check (IDC).
  • Provide technical support to fabrication queries, including identifying defect / rectification requirements.
  • Assist in providing inputs for actual, planning and forecasting progress reports including associated productivity.
  • Check final subcontractor and vendor data manuals to ensure that all requested data has been received and approved.
  • Present issues and problems to Customer in a timely manner and assist Lead Engineer in negotiating resolution in accordance with project and company requirements.
  • Perform (as required) Technical Quality Audit reviews in accordance with MDR Global Procedures.
  • Capture lessons learned and enter into MDRs Lessons Learned system.
  • Monitor costs of own work processes.
  • Assist in the maintenance of departmental technical guidelines and standard calculation notes.
  • Participate in development and maintenance of Global Procedures, Software, and Standard.
  • May participate in standards development committees or task groups such as API.
  • Develop communication and presentation skills (e.g. participation in conferences, lunch and learn sessions).
  • Prepare, review, and (as Lead Engineer) approve automation system definition, including philosophy, specifications, safety drawings, and system architecture.
  • Review and approve Block Diagrams showing component build-up for Production Controls System, Umbilical systems and interface, Subsea control systems.
  • Review and approve Field Layouts showing the configurations for the Drill Centers.
  • Review and approve piping, instruments and controls P&IDs for Xmas Trees, Subsea equipment, Manifolds and PLETs.
  • Review and approve General Arrangement drawings of Umbilical systems, Flying Leads, Jumpers, Manifolds and/or PLETs.
  • Review and approve various Umbilical system analyses.
  • Review and approve Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
  • Review and approve calculations on Cathodic Protection for Subsea Controls Equipment.
  • Review and approve supports, installation details elevations with respect to Mud-mat, sea bottom etc.
  • Review transportation analyses for Umbilicals & Subsea equipment on vessels based on relevant codes.
  • Review and specify, verify and approve the type, location and quantity of Bend Restrictors, Pull-head design, dynamic and static portion designs, End Connectors & Hang Off design based on installation and J-Tube pull-in methodology.
  • Review lifting analyses for Umbilicals and Subsea Equipment in air and subsea.
  • Review and approve analyses of impact loading on Umbilicals and ancillaries due to dropped objects.
  • Review and approve structural analyses of loadings applied to Umbilicals due to interactions with other equipment.
  • Review and approve Umbilicals and Subsea controls / hardware specifications and datasheets.
  • Review and approve material listings for Umbilicals / controls systems and services for detailing scope of work requirements for enquiries and fabrication drawings.
  • Review and approve inputs to P&ID development and markups based on receipt of vendor information.
  • Experience of Subsea Actuated Valves (preferable)
  • Participate in HAZOP, SIL, and Classification Studies, as required and assist in close out of HAZOP action items.
  • Provide construction, pre commissioning, and offshore commissioning support as required.
  • Experience in package management of Umbilical systems (an advantage)
  • Participation in SIT/FAT of Subsea Umbilical systems

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10 yrs. in oil and gas with major contractor or consultant predominantly performing detail design of offshore/subsea facilities.
  • Experience in Subsea EPC projects an advantage
  • Bachelors Degree in Chemical, Electrical or Electronics / Instrumentation Engineering
  • Experience in technical definition and design of Subsea Umbilicals including specification, procurement, technical evaluation, vendor data and deliverables.
  • Detailed knowledge of design techniques and analysis methods, and detailed knowledge of the theory, content and application of standard, codes and guidelines as applicable to Subsea Umbilical and Controls.
  • Knowledgeable in project coordination and execution skills.
