Water Engineering & Design Manager in Manchester, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom

Costain helps to improve peoples lives by deploying technology-based engineering solutions to meet urgent national needs across the UKs energy, water and transportation infrastructures.

Costain is forecast to deliver a significant increase in consultancy and technology services margin during 2020 through to 2024.

As we transition to facilitate this growth different roles and changes to the organisational structure are required.

The head of engineering and design has identified the requirement for an engineering manager to lead and grow our inhouse consultancy offering in the water sector.



What will I be doing?

Role Objectives

Work closely with the assigned Head of Engineering & Design to expand our water offering into a leading edge industry leading capability that is nationally recognised for innovation and successful outcomes.

Key Accountabilities

The primary role for the Water Engineering Manager is to rapidly grow our current team of 30FTE into a team of 100+ engineers and designers. This will be achieved by developing an efficient and innovative delivery model for our Engineering & Design consultancy services.

Strategy

Work with the Sector leadership team, Key Account Directors, Capbility Acocunt Leads and Capability Discipline Leads to define and implement a strategy for selling and delivering consultancy services.

Help define value propositions having clearly understood market drivers and developments ensuring the growth in consultancy services as defined in the Group overall strategy.

Business Development

Support the Key Account Directors in defining and understanding the client problems areas and ensure we have a clear view as to client regulatory drivers.

Ensure quality, proactive contribution to proposals/bids ensuring that our consultancy services delight customers as measured in our win rates and client satisfaction scores.

Lead the development of Client Specific marketing material for consulting services, particularly case studies.

Identify and develop consulting service opportunities on existing contracts through working closes with the Key Account Directors and contract leads.

Work with central work winning during tendering to ensure appropriate consulting service governance has been implemented.

Provide content and support for communications & marketing relating to key account

Operations

Work with the Capability Account Lead to communicate the opportunity pipeline to the Capability Discipline Leads. Interact with the Discipline Leads to explain client requirements and endeavour to provide the required consultancy services to the water sector.

Work with the Capability Discipline Leads to ensure services (including resources) are supplied in line with demand.

Work with the Capability lead team, Discipline Leads and other Capability Account Leads to establish and implement the make-buy model for engineering & design consultancy services.

Work with the Key Account Directors to ensure our goals of delivering in-house consultancy services are delivered and prevent work being awarded externally, that can be done internally.

Assist the Capability Discipline Leads with early visibility of opportunities with our clients e.g. trying to sell some of our front end/strategic consulting services.

Delivery

Work with Capability Discipline Leads to achieve the consultancy service delivery performance requirements.

Provide insight into existing contract status to key consultancy service stakeholders to facilitate improvement in delivery by the Capability.

Assist in the resolution of delivery issues working alongside the Key Account Director and Capability Discipline Leads.

Progress meetings and reporting

Formal, recorded monthly progress meetings. Work with the Head of Engineering (at least monthly) to ensure the development of the capability is in line with client needs.

Reporting (weekly and monthly) as required, including providing information for the monthly Capability board report.



About you

You will be a Chartered Engineer with over 15 years experience of engineering and design in the Water Sector.

You have led an engineering and design function

You can demonstrate you have grown a capability to provide a new service offering

You have an extensive external network across the UK water industry including Clients, contractors and the supply chain

You are an innovator and will bring new ideas to enhance our service offering

Ability to work within budgetary constraints and with other disciplines in Costain.

You have excellent communication skills (written and oral).

You have experience in working collaboratively as well as understanding client problem statements, value propositions, differentiators, USPs and contribution to work winning.
