Discipline Lead for PMO & Project Control (Maternity Cover) in Manchester, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom

What will I be doing?

You will be responsible for leading and delivering the development of your service into an established, growing, outward looking and recognised, client focussed, consultancy service.

Role Objectives

  • Key objective of the role Lead the growth in: technical offering, revenue, profit, headcount, market presence (e.g. social media, thought leadership articles, conferences etc.) of the consultancy service.
  • Deliver personal KPIs.

Key Accountabilities

  • Build a deep understanding of our existing service capability. Then consolidate the service offering (where disparate) and develop the technical capability. Responsible for our external service offering. Develop the  vision and technical strategy for the discipline (like a business plan). Identify and address gaps in the service offering (using training, recruitment or supply chain). Evolve the service offering so that it does not become stagnant. Target expertise and experienced based services and not efficiency (low margin) services.
  • Understand our consultancy projects, our key clients and our case studies.
  • Build a technical community. Use your team to develop ideas participation builds commitment. Understand how to reach back into Costain.
  • External Communication and deliver external recognition of the discipline by: improving the website; thought leadership (social media posts, articles and papers (target multiple relevant journals and magazines); conference presentations; client events (e.g. seminars), industry awards and appropriate memberships. Objectives will be set around this.
  • Understand our partners and supply chain, what they contribute to our offering, how we are the intelligent customer and how we may take the service in house (where appropriate).

Interact with the sectors

  • Interact with the consultancy Capability Account Leads (CALs) and Key Account Directors (KADs) to understand the clients consultancy requirements.
  • Develop a cross sector view.
  • Client interaction via the sectors, the sector BD staff/KADs and CALs.
  • Quality, proactive contribution to proposals/bids. Responsible for discipline technical input to proposals and projects.
  • Ensure we have up to date case studies.

Staff related

  • Lead the bench strength formation.
  • Allocate resource to support the contracts. Organise discipline staff, allocating work and ensuring delivery against plans.  Ability to move staff around contracts and sectors.
  • Recruitment (strategic hiring) for the consultancy services sustainability and growth. To recruit the necessary skilled personnel to the discipline to ensure sustainable operation in all discipline activities and ensure that the optimum balance is achieved between the use of staff and agency workers.
  • Rapid Recruitment (agency hiring) for contracts.
  • Learning and development plan for staff in the discipline. Assist in the development and training of discipline personnel, where necessary. Encourage professional training and chartership 
  • Responsible for ensuring the correct quality and quantity of competent personnel to match the needs of the Sectors/contracts. To do this, liaise with the Sector Directors, Key Account Directors, Programme Directors and Project Managers regarding the resource demand profile. Make sure SOP is up to date, using the agreed SOP processes and procedures.
  • Line Management responsibility including the management of people performance (including Career Development/Performance Reviews), people development, succession planning and promotion.
  • To identify potential promotions and career development moves within the discipline and make recommendations.
  • To manage the performance of staff and where this is deficient deal with this appropriately.

Project delivery

  • Involvement in some project delivery in the consulting field.
  • Ensure consultancy work is delivered in line with the customers expectations and the Costain Way.

Assurance and technical quality

  • Interact with technical assurance to ensure our governance and deliverables are correct. Prepare, check and/or approve deliverables on contracts, where necessary.
  • Intervention, involvement and support of contracts, when required. 
  • To ensure that lessons learned for the discipline are effectively captured, disseminated and assimilated.

Progress meetings and reporting

 

Other responsibilities

  • Ensure all applicable national and international codes of practice, legislation and company/client standards and procedures are complied with.
  • To cascade information to individuals on organizational performance, policy and procedures and to report back to senior management subordinate comments and recommendations for improvements in performance and removal of constraints that constrain performance
  • Formal, recorded monthly progress meetings. Work with the Head of Advisory (at least monthly) to develop the capability and drive progress.
  • Reporting (weekly and monthly) as required, including providing information for the monthly advisory consulting board report.

You will be responsible for leading and delivering the development of your service into an established, growing, outward looking and recognised, client focussed consultancy service.

The Discipline Lead role will fill 50% of the persons time, the other 50% of their time will be spent managing the Manchester PMO team.



About you

  • Demonstrably deep understanding of the discipline.
  • The candidate must have excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • You should have demonstrable experience in leading teams and developing and delivering a strategy.
  • Ability to take a wide overview of company operations and identify key issues.
  • Ability to work within budgetary constraints and with other disciplines in Costain
  • Hold a bachelors degree or equivalent.

  • Have at least 10 years post qualification experience in a PMO/ Project Control/ Project Management role

  • Possess excellent communication skills.

  • Proven skills in the efficient and effective management of others.

  • Preferably an active member of relevant professional memberships such as APM and ACostE.
