Since then we have grown into a leading innovative oil and gas company that rewards its employees by investing heavily in their careers and learning. Our people are our greatest asset, and our commitment to your career will see you thrive in a work environment that offers an industry-leading development programme. When your ideas travel, Shell will benefit and innovation will thrive. Shell has a key role to play in helping meet the UKs growing energy demand, whilst using innovative technologies to develop cleaner energy. We are the largest FTSE 100 company in the UK by market capitalisation, and make a significant contribution to the UK economy. As well as processing 35% of the gas coming into the UK, we serve more than four million customers at our filling stations each week. Shell employs some 6,400 skilled staff as well as many contractors.

Job Description:

A rare opportunity to join a world-class, global team of in-house litigators, handling complex, high-value disputes. Shell Legal currently has over 750 lawyers globally, and if you are a talented litigation expert, this is a great chance to develop your career working for a truly international business, with lots of scope to grow your practice in a positive, supporting company.

Where you fit in

Youll be part of the Europe Middle East and North Africa (EMENA) team within Shells Global Litigation Organisation, which handles a wide range of disputes, including litigation and arbitration matters across the EMENA region.  These may include commercial arbitrations, litigation proceedings before national courts or pre-contentious disputes requiring strategic advice or settlement via ADR. The team works across all Shell business units, so the subject matter varies considerably.

Whats the role?

Based in Shell Centre, London, youll help to provide strategic legal advice to manage risk and protect and preserve Shells reputation. Reporting to the Managing Counsel, this role has a particular focus on handling and advising on shipping disputes involving Shell's Shipping and Maritime Business, though you will also be expected to handle some disputes work relating to other Shell businesses.

You will be able to manage a large team of stakeholders, external counsel, experts, etc. to drive cases forward toward successful outcomes.  Youll also manage engagements with external counsel, including negotiation and execution of non-hours based alternative fee arrangements (AFAs).  The role therefore demands legal acumen coupled with a commercial mindset and a high degree of independence, drive and proactivity.

Naturally, youll be using your shipping experience to handle a range of shipping disputes, and ideally you will have a well-developed network within the shipping industry, such as external lawyers, P&I Clubs, arbitrators, mediators and experts.   Youll be responsible for managing all activity related to disputes, including case assessment, strategy development, client communication, management of outside counsel, recommendation of provisions and disclosures, settlement recommendations and compliance with Shell policies and procedures relating to settlement authorities, and management of reputational issues.

Finally, as an excellent communicator, youll thrive collaborating within a globally diverse team, engaging successfully with clients, managing the expectations of a wide range of stakeholders, and nurturing well-developed networks.

Job Requirements:

What we need from you

Were keen to hear from men and women who are either common law and/or civil law qualified, with experience of handling disputes and other contentious matters, including shipping and maritime disputes. Wed also expect you to be up-to-date with the latest UK judicial and legislative developments, with a particular focus on shipping law.

You must have strong academic credentials and demonstrate a high level of judgement in handling your matters, with a proven ability to anticipate legal risks.  You should also possess excellent communication skills and be able to work seamlessly with business clients, legal colleagues and other internal and external stakeholders, across cultural borders.  You should be someone who drives themselves to a high standard of performance and inspires and encourages others to do the same.
