2. Purposeof role:

The Category Manager (CM) plays a critical role in realising Downstream Procurements (DP) objective to become a world-class procurement organisation with leading capability in category management that deliver relevant, value-adding category strategies to BPs Downstream businesses. The CM is responsible for end-to-end category performance (within their defined scope) and supplier performance management, and will lead a team of specialist category management professionals, operating in accordance with corporate policies and processes, defined governance and delegations of authority.

The primary focus of the CM role is to create transformative category strategies, based on supply market expertise, current and future business needs and global category spend and innovation opportunities that identify impactful business value (with a focus on savings through effective category deployment). The CM also develops effective implementation plans, working in lockstep with Business Interface peers (Site Procurement Manager / Hub Manager) and GBS to support successful implementation to agreed timelines. . The CM and their team will deliver value to the business through taking the lead in the category and ensuring compliance to the agreed strategy and sourcing expectations. The CM is accountable for all sourcing, negotiation and contracting activity in their commodity area which includes expiring contracts, releases from agreements, and project sourcing. They are responsible for reporting on category strategy performance, including compliance. The CM assures that all work activity performed at a category level has the necessary urgency to support safe, compliant, reliable, and efficient business operations. Works closely with the relevant business interface staff in Downstream Procurement (hub or site) to ensure business stakeholders recognise a single, co-ordinated team, communicating on an aligned basis.

The CM is responsible for developing Category Specialist talent in support of the Global Category Directors broader mission to improve the strategic capability of the global category network.

3. Key Results/Accountabilities expected from role

Stakeholder Management

  • Working with the business interface resources in the DP organisation to ensure consistency and alignment of messages, and that customers are satisfied with the procurement service provided, and understand its value and impact on the business
  • Own relationships with key regional and/or global suppliers
  • Working through the business interface resources in the DP organisation, manages the Procurement interface for category relevant site / region functional roles e.g. Technical Managers for Manufacturing or Marketing Managers and Retail Compliance Managers for Sales, Marketing & Supply
  • Working through the Business Interface organisation, manage business stakeholders to secure buy-in for category strategy, support and resourcing for implementation and category compliance
  • Manage interface between category strategy development and implementation by the delivery organisation, working in partnership with Category Excellence, GBS, Business Interface and Business teams
  • Ensure effective communication between the category management and business interface organisations, Ensuring that category specific content (e.g. status updates, market insights etc.) are shared with the business interface organisation, and that the business insights brought by the business interface organisation are fully reflected in category strategies and implementation
  • Manages multisite supplier relationships to ensure performance, innovations, and enhanced partnerships.
  • Working with the Business Interface organisation to understand business priorities and requirements, and ensures no compromises on safe and compliant operations
  • Bring strong track record of achievement and deep category understanding to advise and influence business stakeholders

Category Strategy and Implementation

  • Analyse demand and supply market to prepare and deliver category and sourcing strategies (ensuring alignment with business strategies) to deliver agreed financial targets
  • Provide deep expertise within their category area, with an intimate knowledge of the supply market, key dynamics and latest thinking within the field. Have a clear view of Supply Market Analysis and segmentation.
  • Develop and drive category strategy and implementation plan, taking in account optimum purchasing channels and contracting
  • Ensure timeliness and quality of all contracts required for safe, compliant and reliable business operations i.e. implementation in the appropriate systems, compliance and contract management and requisitioner training
  • Oversee effective contract management, performance reporting, monitoring and managing escaped spend where it occurs
  • Responsible for end to end delivery of category strategies, including the delivery of agreed business benefits
  • Working within the global category network, ensures that category strategies and implementation take full advantage of global sources of supply, and works with the business interface organisation to build support for new and innovative sources of supply
  • Ensure the category strategy is compliant with BP policies such as risk management, delegation of authority and DP functional guidelines.
  • Draw on deep expertise, track record of success and business understanding to provide authorities advice and guidance to resolve complex business problems
  • Lead Global complex strategy - with Subject matter expertise responsible for business approvals, resourcing, investment and embedding programs in all regions including Run Change Management programs considering, ensure common understanding, influencing with critical business stakeholders and internal forums, training, execution and compliance

Sourcing and Supplier Management

The Senior Category Specialist (SCS) plays a supporting role in realising Downstream Procurements (DP) objective to become a world-class procurement organisation with leading capability in category management that delivers relevant, value-adding category strategies to BPs Downstream businesses. The SCS provides dedicated specialist category strategy development and implementation support to the Category Manager. Working with colleagues in the business interface they are responsible for engaging business stakeholders to understand business priorities and requirements and ensure category strategies and implementation aligns with those needs.
The primary focus of the Senior Category Specialist (SCS) role is to support the Category Manager to define category strategies by performing analysis and co-ordinating key inputs e.g. supply market analysis, cost modelling and benchmarking. The SCS also supports the Category Manager to implement the category strategy at a site / market level by managing the localisation of the category strategy, sourcing activities and contract management to agreed timelines, and supplier management activities. They are also responsible for supporting the category manager in delivering value to the business by ensuring compliance with agreed category strategies and sourcing expectations. Ultimately, they are responsible for the execution of all of these activities to deliver the objective of providing the business with a supply base that supports safe, reliable and compliant operations, and that also delivers the innovation and business benefits agreed in the category strategy. Key Results/Accountabilities expected from role
Stakeholder Management Support

  • In support of the Category Manager, manage the interface between category strategy development and implementation by the delivery organisation, working in partnership with Category Excellence, GBS, Business Interface and Business teams
  • Lead the development of communication content to ensure that category specific messages (such as status, plans, compliance, and market insights) are effectively disseminated across the DP organisation, including the business interface organisation
  • Supports the objective of no compromise on safe and compliant operations
  • Provide specialist Procurement and category guidance and advice to business stakeholders
  • Provide specialist Procurement and category guidance and coaching to more junior members of the DP team

Category Strategy & Implementation Support
  • Lead the development of category strategies for low complexity categories (dependent on category scope and seniority of Category Specialist)
  • Support CM to ensure a deep expertise within the category area, by accessing MI and external knowledge to ensure the category strategy is informed by an intimate knowledge of the supply market, key dynamics and latest thinking within the field
  • Manage inputs to the development of category and sourcing strategies i.e. supply market analysis, cost modelling and benchmarking
  • Working with the global category network, supports the development of new and innovative global sources of supply, and working with the business interface organisation, helps to build understanding and support for new sources of supply in the business

Sourcing and Supplier Management
  • Lead local and regional contract negotiation and execution
  • Lead local and regional supplier management activities
  • Execute sourcing (high-medium complexity categories) and oversee sourcing execution by GBS (low-medium complexity categories)
  • Support business in contract holder roles, gather performance feedback (and variation requests) for input to supplier performance review

  • MCIPS/ISM qualification, or at stage of pre-qualification, desirable.

Experience
  • 7 - 10 years relevant experience required

  • Skilled Application in tactical procurement
  • Skilled Application in supplier management
  • Experience in Ariba e-sourcing or other e-procurement tools is desirable.
  • Good working knowledge of P2P processes, and SAP system
  • Demonstrable experience in the relevant category is preferable
