Civil Engineer (Site Representative) in BW-, Botswana

Wood is currently recruiting for a Civil Engineer (Site Representative) based in Botswana who will represent Wood in front of Debswana during the Orapa Fine Residue Disposal project construction, with a surveillance role to assure adequate controls are in place to ensure that the methods, standards and quality required by Drawings and Specification produced by Wood are met by the Contractor.

Key Responsibilities:

Immediately (after inductions) on mobilization to site - This work should be completed within the first two weeks on site:

  • Obtain and report to AFW the scope (range and extent) of the existing Quality Control procedures and working documentation maintained by Kalcon and intended to ensure the construction of the FRD as described in the Contractors Project Quality Management Plan, PQMP (or similar)
  • Immediately investigate and understand if actual QC procedures are a.) in accordance with the Contractors PQMP and b.) in accordance with the AFW documents (Drawings, Specification etc.)
  • Provide a short report (addressed to AFW / Debswana) describing the scope of existing Quality Control
  • Work with AFW to validate the existing construction QC procedures, identify any necessary changes / revisions to the QC scope to bring the procedures to international standards - make recommendations to Debswana for any change in scope 

Ongoing - throughout Contract

  • Undertaking surveillance of construction activities principally associated with earthworks and concreting (see details below). Surveillance sheets shall be used by the Site Representative during the works which shall record these matters (TBA). These sheets together with any other relevant reports or data shall be archived in a surveillance file as part of the record of construction
  • Responsible for assessing quality of sampling, test methods and data produced by the Contractor. Responsible for checking that it meets the intentions of the Contractors method statements and PQMP (or similar) and the requirements of the relevant Standards and Code of Practice
  • Responsible for data analysis and report preparation as required
  • Continually review the Contractors QC activities, working with the Contractor to ensure that up - to - date field records (daily QC reports, meeting documents, record drawings and sketches and other records, test reports and documents necessary to document construction activities) have been kept and are being maintained
  • Assist in the preparation of interim and final Construction Reports and the preparation of Record drawings for the project
  • Preparation of weekly progress quality reports for submission to Debswana. Prepare and recommend valid and appropriate quality assurance and control measures for specific site activities, e.g. data collection activities

Coordinate quality related technical activities with personnel representing Debswana and the Contractor:

  • Ensure inspection and surveillance activities are technically valid and results are coordinated for project continuity and control. Ensure that the project directives and other requirements and deadlines are met. Perform formal and informal inspections of completed or partially completed work. When instructed by the Debswana Project Manager, work with the Debswana Project Quality Assurance Manager to undertake audits of the construction QA / QC procedures
  • Participate in construction meetings with Debswana and with the Contractor. Review documentation including the Contractors documents and drawings
  • Ensure technical queries are managed in accordance with agreed process and procedures. Ensure that the Contractors duties are performed by competent and experienced personnel and in sufficient number, and promptly advise Debswana in the negative case
  • Please note you may be expected to undertake other tasks as long as they fall within the broad remit of the job
  • Perform the duties of a field or nominated supervisor only where instructed in writing by Debswana. Any documents produced in this role shall be ultimately signed off as checked by Debswana personnel. Be familiar with potential safety, health, environmental and security hazards associated with project activities and advise Debswana of procedures to mitigate


Skills / Qualifications

  • Civil Engineering degree / diploma
  • At least 2 - 5 years relevant experience
  • Registration with the Botswana Engineering Board
  • Hands - on experience in at least project costing or project planning
  • A pro - active attitude
  • Personal integrity and trustworthiness
