Intermediate Aquatic Biologist in Mississauga, ON, Canada

Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is recruiting for an Intermediate Aquatic Biologist to join our team in Mississauga, ON. Our client base includes federal, state, provincial and municipal governments; ADM, PPP and Design-Build entities; airports; railroads and transit agencies; ports; mining, oil and gas exploration; energy providers; First Nations; and private industry. We provide a comprehensive range of services from planning and environmental studies to preliminary and final design, construction administration, and operations and rehabilitation. The successful candidate will have a background in the successful delivery of aquatic ecosystem assessments and monitoring studies. The candidate will be familiar with applicable Canadian federal and provincial legislation and regulations relating to aquatic environments and experience in navigating permitting and authorization processes as they relate to infrastructure and mining development projects is considered an asset. This candidate will also possess a background in scientific study design and biostatistics.

Responsibilities of the job include:

  • Reporting directly to job specific task and project managers in provision of biological technical support
  • Provide support to senior personnel organizing logistics for environmental technical field programs with emphasis on the appropriate management and application of aquatic ecology-based surveys
  • Assist with document preparation for Federal and Provincial environmental approvals, related to mining and other development projects
  • Participate in field work and provide support in local and remote locations related to baseline, environmental effects monitoring and other post development/permit compliance monitoring
  • Undertake data and field sample management including, but not limited to, the collection, recording and digital filing, transport and lab submission of samples, completion of chain of custody documents, analysis and associated Quality Control of data
  • Organizing and maintaining field equipment as required
  • Carry out data analysis including statistical analysis to support reporting deliverables
  • Complete reports, with senior guidance, on a variety of topics pertaining to the natural environment and potential impacts and mitigation strategies associated with potential developments
  • Liaise with other technical specialists including ecologists, hydrologists, GIS specialists, infrastructure engineers, environmental, and other disciplines
  • Providing support to project leads including scheduling, staffing, equipment maintenance and regular communication to achieve efficient, scope compliant and cost-effective assignment delivery
  • Interface with contractors, sub-consultants and regulatory agencies as required
  • Provide support in the development of Project and Site-Specific Health and Safety Plans
  • Development of skills in Environmental Construction Compliance Monitoring and related project specific programs including application of MTO based environmental specialty training
  • Contributing to the preparation of proposals and work plans for future projects
  • Other duties as assigned to you


Skills / Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Biology, Ecology or related discipline
  • Biologist/Ecologist experienced with field sampling, environmental management and/or environmental assessment with 3+ years of experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required
  • Knowledge of provincial, federal and municipal environmental legislation, (i.e., Fisheries Act, Endangered Species Act and Conservation Authorities Act), guidelines, policies (i.e., official plans) and best practices
  • Valid Canadian Drivers License (e.g., Ontario G)
  • Ability to work in remote locations for extended periods
  • Experience in the identification of Ontario fishes required, as well as flora and fauna (trees, shrubs, aquatic macrophytes, birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and/or insects) considered an asset
  • Valid Canadian Coast Guard Pleasure Craft Operators Card (PCOC)
  • Valid First Aid and CPR A +AED training/certification, considered an asset
  • Class II MNRF Backpack Electrofishing Certification, considered an asset
  • Proficiency with statistical software (e.g., R), considered an asset
  • Familiarity with erosion and sediment control techniques and maintenance, considered an asset
  • Previous experience with client, stakeholder, First Nations and regulatory agency liaison considered an asset
