Location: London / Project locations

Reports to: Subsea Delivery Manager / Engineering Manager

The Subsea Controls Engineer will act as the single point of technical authority for project subsea controls.

Specific responsibilities will include:

  • coordinating definition of the requirements for monitoring and control of subsea equipment and systems operation;
  • leading/overseeing FEED by contractor in respect of subsea controls systems and umbilicals including integration with the FPSO control systems;
  • delivery and assurance of the subsea controls and umbilical system throughout the design, procurement, construction, commissioning and start-up phases of the DWT Project.

Key duties will include:-

Concept & Architecture:

  • Coordinate identification of subsea system monitoring and control requirements and issues relating to e.g. operability, installation and interface.
  • Develop concepts and coordinate selection and specification of the most appropriate subsea controls architecture and technology.

Design:

  • Guide and manage the development and optimisation of the subsea controls design.
  • Define and control the subsea controls functionality.
  • Act as the single point of technical contact for Client's input to the design, construction and commissioning of the subsea controls system.
  • Work with Drilling and Production Groups to agree tree and control system functionality.
  • Work with the Christmas Tree and Control System supplier to incorporate functional requirements into the design and manufacture of the trees and controls equipment.
  • Coordinate technical development and design of interfaces together with the Subsea designer and FPSO designer including:
  • facilities for operational control of the subsea systems;
  • controls interface and optimum interface arrangements to the MCS;
  • requirements for HPU/EPS on the FPSO and the need for any back-up spares etc
  • Participate in HAZOP workshop on subsea system design.

Manufacture:

  • Oversee manufacture of the Christmas tree controls.
  • Oversee manufacture of the control modules.
  • Identify additional installation and maintenance requirement.
  • Specify the requirements for testing of trees and controls equipment.
  • Track/expedite manufacture of subsea controls equipment and ensure correct and timely delivery to manifold fabricator and drilling group.
  • Prepare and document handover to Drilling and Production departments.
  • Foster team spirit and cooperation within the Contractors’ and suppliers’ organisations

Installation:

  • Support the Drilling Group during tree installation.
    • Support the offshore installation contractor during the installation of the subsea facilities.

Pre-operations and Operations:

  • Involve and engage Operations, Production Engineering and Well Engineering in design and specification of the subsea control systems.
  • Identify, together with Operations, appropriate media, format and content for operating instructions, contingency plans references and data and coordinate timely preparation and delivery of same.
  • Identify, together with Operations, appropriate training for client (or O&M contractor) operations and maintenance supervisors.
  • Contribute to the preparation of system start-up and commissioning plans.
  • Coordinate, until hand over to Operations, in-country support provided by the subsea controls systems suppliers.
  • Support the development of performance standards and written schemes of verification for safety critical equipment.

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

  • Degree qualified in relevant discipline Fully qualified membership of a professional engineering institution.
  • Minimum 10 years experience of subsea controls systems and Christmas trees (preferably gained with Supplier and Operator).
  • Experience of a range of subsea controls and operational design issues (preferably gained with an Operator).
  • Experience in the execution of major offshore E&P projects.
  • Understanding of well and production operations.
  • Experience of working with engineering contractors in a client role.
  • Knowledge and Experience in application of regulatory requirements, industry codes and standards relating to subsea system and equipment design, construction and operation.
