Job Title : Environmental Engineer

1. Job Purpose: To support the SHE Management System through development and implementation of required environmental elements. The position is an environmental generalist requiring qualifications in air quality, waste management, ground water monitoring, water discharge quality and hazardous materials management.
2. Dimensions:
Other: The position will maintain environmental assessments and implement plans to eliminate, control or mitigate the potential adverse effects of environmental emissions or personnel exposure. The person will be responsible for fully understanding external EHS requirements, relevant laws and regulations, environmental permits and implementing programs to assure conformance.
3. Key Result Areas:
• Based on environmental impact assessments, develop and maintain procedures to eliminate, control or mitigate potential adverse environmental and human effects.
• Develop and maintain waste characterization and management program and ensure storage, treatment, transport, recycling and safe disposal of all wastes to meet relevant national requirements and minimizes exposure and liabilities.
• Participate in flare minimization plan development and implementation. Interface with multidisciplinary teams to effect flaring reduction.
• Participate and/ or provide technical support for maintaining Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) calibration, data QA/QC and various upgrade functions.
• Develop air emission inventories for stationary and fugitive sources. Implement emission source test program. Analyze and store ambient air quality and meteorological data.
• Monitor water discharge quality and volumes and ground water levels and quality and store data in databases.
• Implement a hazardous materials marking and labelling protocol to control environmental risks during the storage, handling and use of hazardous materials.
• Incorporate Hazardous Materials Programs into enterprise-wide management software (material management modules) and procurement procedures.
• Update with the Operations Group, an effective oil spill and hazardous materials emergency response plan, including drills and external interfaces.
• Develop required environmental compliance reports for agencies, lenders, and shareholders.
• Carries out other and similar duties at the request of the Environmental Affairs Manager and SHE Group Manager.
4. Operating Environment, Framework and Boundaries:
Implementation of effective environmental programs in a multi-cultural company will require excellent influencing skills. Incumbent must possess the ability to communicate effectively with management and staff in all departments and external agencies. Within the framework of the SHE-MS the incumbent will have freedom to adapt or develop implementation strategies which appeal across a broad spectrum of experience, knowledge and skill located in the client groups.
5. Communications and Working Relationships:
• Regular meetings with Environmental Affairs Manager to discuss operational matters and work priorities.
• Regular internal contact with Operations superintendents, supervisors and other personnel to provide advice on environmental issues.
• Occasional external contacts with RLIC, LES, Ministry of Environment.
6. Problem Solving/Complexity:
• Environmental programs encompass the entire company-wide range of activities and require broad knowledge of work processes outside the SHE function. Setting work priorities based on risk / cost benefit factors rather than seniority of the requesting party will be an ongoing challenge.
• Selection of appropriate management options for all wastes and effluents will have a measurable effect on the companys reputation, profit margins and liabilities.
• Development of appropriate environmental compliance programs, will manage regulatory liabilities and lender oversight.
7. Decision Making Authority and Responsibility:
• Environmental programs are goal setting standards in line with internationally accepted practice. The incumbent has a degree of flexibility in decision making. As a focal point for implementation of decisions, he will exert influence on budget and objectives.
• He will influence and advise on work methods and procedures adopted by client groups.
• The incumbent will have freedom to establish realistic and measurable plans, goals and objectives.
8. Knowledge Skills and Experience:
• This position requires an experienced and motivated individual. Possession of a Chemical or Mechanical Engineering Degree from a recognized university is essential with post-graduate study in Environmental Engineering/ Management/ Science desirable. Experience with implementation of Total Quality Management and statistical process control are highly desirable.
• Relevant experience working at a responsible level in a world-class energy industry or equivalent committed to excellence in SHE performance is considered essential.
• Incumbent must have a service focus to delivery quality support in a timely and cost effective manner and an ability to participate and lead teams of co-workers is a pre-requisite.
• Highly developed influencing and communication skills are a fundamental requirement.
9. Work Description:
• 50% office work for record keeping and report preparation and 50% outdoor work, stack monitoring, water sampling, soil sampling, noise monitoring, waste management, general housekeeping and site inspections, etc.
